Tobacco Giant Philip Morris to End Cigarette Sales in UK in next Decade

In the News

About time too, but 10 years is too long, 10 days would have been better

I will be glad to see the back of cancer sticks

I dont know how anyone can still smoke now with all the information about how bad they are for peoples health

The problem is they are moving onto e- cigarettes which they say are less harmful , not according to current research

They are replacing one killer with another

All tobacco companies should be sued for the addiction and damage they have done to countless millions

I speak so vehemently about this as it has affected close members of my family

I stopped smoking about 20 years ago and can smell the grass and the flowers grow now as well as the beautiful ground scent after first rain. Problem is when we abandon one bad habit we invariably replace it with another. I can taste my food so much better now so I fear my culinary appetites will do me comparable damage. I no more exude soot but eat half the buffet lol.

Yes i hear that a lot M, when people give up it does tend to increase the appetite

Ironically thats how a lot of smokers became hooked , the rumours that smoking can help you reduce weight and stay slim encouraged people to take up the habit, which was promoted by the the tobacco industry through advertising using slim beautiful people

And it was so glamourised in the early days , it became 'Hip' to smoke

But now there is so much information about the harm it can cause ,on the news, online , in newspapers etc etc, it should be enough to make people stop

But it doesn't unfortunately , and then along comes the new age cigarette that is said to be so much healthier , not

And good on you for going 20 years nicotine free 👍

telmel I so agree T.Another problem about vaping is that it will also reel in others who wouldn't otherwise smoke at all. I am not convinced that it is any less dangerous either. I badgered my father once on a boat trip to Greenwich when I was about 15.I was allowed to smoke a cigar but I had to smoke it all. I went as green as a cucumber and never touched another for at least another 4 years and then was sick again and threw them on the common. That should have been enough but I went back for seconds and was then hooked for about ten years before learning hypnosis.I now hate cigs and love spiders lol.

L, its not about fairness , its about prolonging your life and not succuming to cancer

Yes there are many things that can shorten your life, stress , chemicals in food, water, in the air, the list is endless, but to choose to increase the risk and have companies encourage you by making a killer product to me is obscene

I know tobacco has been around since the americas used it, columbus found it and

John Rolfe started commercial production , but at least then it was pure, tobacco companies now add all kinds of extras to it, like arsenic, and other chemicals to keep you addicted

And if you are unlucky enough to purchase them on the black market you will be lucky if more than 50% is tobacco, its anyones guess what else they put in it to increase their profits

Sorry M , i posted this after i read your post, i see you have mentioned some things i said

Leannexxx L, its not in us, the chemicals in cigarettes alter your DNA and mess with other cells to cause lung cancer etc

Heres a sample of how this happens, theres so much more on google to see

Smoking can cause cancer and then block your body from fighting it: Poisons in cigarette smoke can weaken the body's immune system, making it harder to kill cancer cells. When this happens, cancer cells keep growing without being stopped. Poisons in tobacco smoke can damage or change a cell's DNA

Leannexxx L, thats what people say when they want an excuse to carry on smoking

My mum used to say this all the time when i used to complain about it to her and my dad and what it was doing to them

Unfortunately i can't complain any more

Its very hard to stay healthy in the world we live in , and i know people find it difficult to exist without something to help relieve the stresses, drinking coffee, having an alcoholic beverage, and smoking for example , and life would be very dull if we couldnt, i am not judging , but i feel sad for the millions , if not billions over time since its existence that have lost their lives because of an addiction caused by companies only interested in profit

Leannexxx L, nobody is asking you to stop smoking , i am not, i started the post to show how one tobacco company is moving from tobacco to vaping and thinks thats a healthier option

I have only mentioned some personal circumstances that explain why i feel this way about smoking , if you get enjoyment from it then thats fine , its your choice

Leannexxx Its because people are becoming more aware of the dangers of tobacco, with the internet and news , everybody has access to it, and more people are quitting

They have made hundreds of billions profit over the years and want to keep the gravy train going

So they are trying to promote a so called healthier option , vaping

They can see it is more attractive to people , its an up to date technology and smells better than tobacco

Unfortunately it is being shown as not being a healthy option even with limited research and what has been made is showing negative results

It could be a ticking timebomb

I think the problem is not so much with 'natural' tobaccos but the chemicals that go into the manufactured sort.Native Americans list all sorts of healing properties.Philip Morris on the other hand no doubt have formaldehyde and other embalming chemicals in theirs!

If someone wants a smoke, let them have a smoke.

If someone wants a drink, let them have a drink.

If someone wants a pie........

As long as it doesn't impact too much on my life, I'm not bothered.

We all have our vices whether it be cigarettes, booze or too much cake.

The only problem I have is with these e-cigarettes. No-one knows the long term effects and they are unregulated.

Yes TC you are correct , we live in a so called democracy and have the freedom to do what we want, but when family members we love die of cancer through years of smoking , when no information was given or known about the dangers in the early years , then people have a right to be angry that the companies are allowed to carry on producing and people continue dying , the only difference now is that the danger is put on the outside of the packets because of legislation, not because the companies wanted it

telmel You can say the same about anything really. Alcohol abuse, cake abuse etc.

All we can do is advise people, but shouldn't try to apply our will on them.

TheChimp I know TC , but at least eating a cake is not altering your DNA to give you a cancer , in moderation it wont harm you

Alcohol is a big problem , it is probably the worst , as many people die from alcohol addiction and it ruins so many lives and impacts on society, but thats another subject

And yes you are correct , people have a choice, and knowledge is power, so hopefully people will be empowered to stay healthy and look after themselves

telmel We're all going to die sometime.

According to the charity adverts, 50% of us will get cancer anyway. And that's without all the other terrible diseases out there.

I'll just keep on plodding along and do what I want to do.

And when I do die, there won't be any normal funeral, they can just torch me. As far as I'm concerned, they can put me out with the bins.

I don’t agree that people should sue the tobacco companies unless they started smoking years ago. We have been told since the 60s how bad it is for us and we have to take responsibility for our choices. There’s a lot of help out there for anyone that wants to stop.

Exactly G, people were not told of the dangers years ago, so they would be entitled to sue, the later smokers make their own choices

Unlike asbestos, nobody knew it caused cancer in the early days but people still sued the companies

The latest news on smoking today, there will be no cigarettes within 10 years
