Travelling Christmas Eve
Ask a Question
Has anyone ever travelled on Christmas eve via main rail trains? Is it as bad as I'm picturing? We have decided to go to my partners sisters in Manchester from Newcastle but I have to work on Christmas eve morning.
I am trying to build myself up for the hectic ride ahead with an 8 year old.
I have travelled by rail on that date before. The trains are full to overflowing, very hectic and always had to stand for some of the journey. Being with family will be worth it. So try and stay calm, as it is easy to become overwhelmed on Christmas Eve. Good luck.
I havent traveled via train on Christmas Eve, but if you're going to do it please be careful.
It probably will not be that bad as it’s only takes just over 2 half hours to get to Manchester from Newcastle
The internet is your friend . All engineering works (and potential delays /diversions ) were announced today and the timetables were amended (where applicable ) . Just go on the train companies website you should get the info . Should be seamless unless we have a massive snowfall ! Enjoy your Xmas . That is fact , check it out yourself - and don't believe the ill informed doom mongers !
I would advise you to book your tickets in advance and make sure you have reserved seats. It will be busy but so long as you have a seat, you’ll be okay.
gerrykelly25 we already have reserved seats. Just worrying about the travel in general.
NelDawson I travelled Intercity on Sunday and the trains were unbelievably busy. People were sitting on the floor. The heating was on and we were all sweating! Bring some water with you. Many also had masks on, which is sensible given that it was so busy. Hope your journey is okay.
I have never travelled on Christmas eve but remember travelling up from Uni in December. 4 hour train journey, standing all the way as the train company had suspended reserved seating, so even though I had booked one in advance, I didn't get it. There were people standing at every door section, people standing in the aisles etc. There were 2 fold down seats in the door area where I was standing and we all took it in turns to use them and spoke to each other and kept the kids entertained. I've had much worse train journeys.
I would just make sure you book your seats and if you have a family rail card, go 1st class as that won't be so crowded, book them ASAP with the family discount it shouldn't be that expensive. Take a tablet for your 8 year old to watch movies, get the chocs out
