Tui Plane - Serious Software Error

Ask a Question

I read recently that a Tui plane experienced a “serious error” due to a software error.

Their reservation system classified any female using the title “Miss” as a child. Their weight was allocated as a child’s “standard weight” of 35kg instead of an adult weight of 69kg. This resulted in the captain calculating the load sheet required for take off as being 1200kg lighter than it actually was.

Tui say it was an isolated incident and the fault has been corrected.

If anyone reading this works for an airline, is this the norm? Or when passengers check-in, is there a visual (human) check on the passengers boarding? Where has the human touch gone?

BlueEyesX very worrying. It would be more reassuring if they did a software calculation backed up by a human too. Sorry, I don’t know anyone who works for an airline but that’s an interesting question.

Absolutely terrifying that so much of our lives are now in the hands of computers and machines. At least with human error there is a chance of someone picking it up but I have never heard of a machine checking a machine!

Also worrying that there was not some sort of built in alert that flagged up the fact that so many "children" were flying.
