Television cameras allowed to broadcast criminals being jailed in English and Welsh courts for first time

Barristers’ association warns of potential for ‘unwarranted attacks’ on judges

Footage of criminals being jailed is to be broadcast from courts in England and Wales for the first time, amid warnings that the move could spark “unwarranted attacks” on judges.

A new law will allow television cameras, which were previously banned from courtrooms, to film judges’ full sentencing remarks in cases chosen by major broadcasters.

Legal campaigners welcomed the change as a way to improve open justice and public understanding of the reasons behind sometimes controversial prison terms.

I suppose that I don't have much of a problem with this apart from the fact that TV companies are being allowed to choose what they cover - which seems very biased to me?!

Surely it should be a case of show one show them all?

As for judges being held to account, well I think they should be, we are all held to account for what we do in our jobs and they are only following our flawed laws. 🐞

Will the juries be filmed? Could be dangerous for people giving evidence? If these people are seen on tv could they be targeted for revenge? that is my 1st thought.

I thought it said that they would film the judges summaries to show how they justified the sentences, not all the court proceedings 🐞

tumblespots if it's as simple as that, why not have a random list read out out afterwards?

MeestairChrees That wouldn't boost the ratings! They want some sensationalism and if a judge is attacked the TV companies would shed some crocodile tears but rub their hands together in glee. Money is god. 🐞

tumblespots that's what I wasn't sure of. I can't see people wanting to tune in to just the judge talking as they will want to see the whole thing. That's how it starts, then it moves to the whole court case. I don't think its right. you could be innocent and on trial and everyone watching you and you become a celebrity. No thanks. Judges becoming celebrities. No, let them do their jobs without a media circus.

ShellyAnn You are right, that would be far better than public trail on TV. 🐞

How great to be able to see ourselves more of the judicial system we have ever seen.

To be able to have a chance to judge ourselves on the summing up of a case by a judge.

It would be interesting, as you say, to be able to make the judgement ourselves and see if we actually agree with the decisions being made, but, I don't think they are showing whole trials. 🐞
