UK 'To Bring in 14-Day Quarantine' for Air Passengers

In the News

UK airlines say they have been told the government will bring in a 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving in the UK from any country apart from the Republic of Ireland in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The new restriction is expected to take effect at the end of this month.

At the end of this month? Seriously?! It's taken them ages to even consider this, and they will only implement it at the END of this month?

It's long overdue! It should have been initiated weeks ago. I can't understand why it it won't be until the end of the month - crazy!

This should have been put in place weeks ago ready for all holiday makers coming back from Italy/Spain etc, bit like 'closing the door after horse has bolted'.

I read that the other day. Although this will of course have financial implications like everything else, it will also bring about a positive change in the business world aside from the obvious benefits to public health. Flying to another country just for a meeting has always been ridiculously over the top and now people are being forced to embrace technology, it will probably continue even after we get past this.

travelling for business has always been deemed a perk and is tax deductable, so a lot of people actually enjoyed that side of the job

ptenn00 Some didn't! It's alright at a young age but I know my Dad wasn't massively keen on travelling to places towards the end of his career as it can be a lonely existence.

But will people actually be quarantined?

Because what I read was that they were just going to be to asked to voluntarily quarantine, which is useless.

they will fine those who violate the quarantine, but I don't have much faith in that system/strategy

TheChimp I don't understand how the Police will know 1. They are not from this country and 2. How long they've been here.

Dennab That's the thing, the police won't know, so there's absolutely no point in it whatsoever.

Should have happened ages ago along with temperature checks at all airports. It's another thing that is unlikely to be enforced.

Can’t believe the backlash I’ve been reading about it, with people and those of the leisure industry claiming that the quarantine will kill off tourism. Yes, tourism could be killed off but in another way...

hspexy Should have closed the borders months ago.

We need a New Zealand type lockdown.

TheChimp yes it’s alarming how it’s been so lax. Some people who were expatriated couldn’t believe that when they arrived at Heathrow, no one even greeted them to give them advice, let alone checking them, and so they made their merry way home via public transport

hspexy There'll be another spike in a month or so, mark my words.

it was one of the first things a lot of countries did when they got wind of the virus, so not sure why the UK took so long to think about it? A bit like the mask situation

ptenn00 yes, not sure why they’re approaching such matters so sluggishly. Perhaps they dont want to wear the masks themselves?

It's going to be ok, lol. If you go on holiday to France or Irish Republic you don't need to go into quarantine as both countries are exempt https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52610594 So, do we holiday in Spain via France?

lol that is crazy. So we could be fined for going into Scotland or Wales, but it's fine to go outside of this?

I couldn't believe that we had no restrictions in place already.

It is inconceivable to me that we a) didn't stop all people coming into the country. b) that we didn't test them and enforce quarantine. This government doesn't seem to learn anything and even now are only suggesting that at the end of May people arriving go home ans self quarantine - do they really think that they will self quarantine? I'm sure if they consider themselves free of covid - they won't bother.

What we need is some politicians with some standing, presence, integrity & leadership. Someone to trust and believe in. All we have is a bumbling buffoon who is blustering his way through. They are ineffectual & idiotic - there's no leadership there. (That's no to say the anyone else would do better - there are poor leadership choices) 🐞

I am surprised it has taken so long for a decision to be made for this quarantine it should have been in place when lockdown started

The airports did not get this message from the government. And till it is not a law...pfff....also now the industry suffered and they need more passengers and 14 days quarantine will not going to make it appealing to go to holiday...Is it?

I know it sounds weird but they should ventilate disinfectant in the air on the planes to kill the virus. One infected person there can infect everyone, because everyone is on the same air.

Should have done so a lot sooner. But as I like to be optimistic I will say that it's better late than never.
