Do You Disagree with University Fees?

Do you agree or disagree with University Fess?
I presonally dont believe we should have to pay 9k a year.
Doesnt matter who pays for it. We already get free healthcare, we should also get free education.
Getsome this topic isnt about what taxes people pay, its about university fees. All I asked was your opinion do you think they should be free or keep the fee.
chelseaturpin ok then NO it shouldnt be free, it should be paid for by the student and if successful i.e actually going into a job you have studied for then it should be reduced or part refunded.
You get 'free' education until the end of secondary school. Education is funded by the tax payer. If you wish to be educated to a higher level than secondary school then that is your decision. Whilst the fees maybe shouldn't be 9k a year, there needs to be some financial contributions from students.
I have 2 degrees, an undergrad and a post grad. I worked whilst I was an undergrad, as did my friends, as even without uni fees, we still had rent, bills, transport and food to pay for. Going to university is expensive. It should be easier for poorer students to go to uni, but you can't ask the tax payer to pay for everything as if you keep putting up taxes but don't raise wages then people will struggle even more and will resent paying for your further education.
MrsCraig They should have incentives to refund or reduce fees when people have completed the course and gone into employment. I know loads of people that have either wasted the opportunity or working in a job not related to the degree. Could you imagine how much it would get abused if it was paid for the taxpayer. Ouch
Getsome I know a lot of people like that too. It would definitely get abused. I don't mind paying my taxes to fund education, I'm a teacher after all and I do believe everyone is entitled to an education and should go to university if they wish, but university is further education, it is not mandatory.
I think that incentives would be a good idea.
MrsCraig Same here i have no problem paying for standard education but not further education. Paying towards someone to go to uni to do a sports degree and then work in a call centre, no thanks.
I spent four years at university getting hammered, being a big part of the student radio and came out with a 'Desmond'. Why should the public have to fund that? Universities are businesses with massive running costs. Somebody has to pay for that.
i definitely think that university should be free, it was free for a long time and then the fees exploded.
Ziad4321 I agree they are too high but dont agree they should be free as they would get a abused. The fees should be lowered and an incentive should be in place to reduce or even pay back the fees after completion and confirmed employment.
Getsome well that is okay as we all have opinions when people say it will be abused i do not think so as
There were 446,457 UCAS applicants for 1998 entry, of which 73.9% (329,788) were accepted.
A total of 521,420 people have applied to start a course in 2020
The uk population has increased by 9 million during1998 and 2020 so the claim that it would be abused is a lie
Ziad4321 Your right we all have different opinions but i do think it would get abused like everything most things that why i think there should be some sort of payment upfront and people that dont abuse the system and complete the course and actually go into employment relevant to the degree then they should be refunded either all or part.
Ziad4321 Yeah and if you are on a high income you are ok but lower income and your ******
The trouble with free uni places for all is that every kid in the country would want to go even if they were not suited or intelligent enough. A nice 3 years of fun and maybe nothing worth much at the end if they are just there for a good time. It really is unfair to ask gov't/taxpayer to keep paying for everything because there isn't an endless pot. Surely care services and better under 18 education, nhs, public transport, benefits etc etc take precedence. I lent my granddaughter her fees and she diligently repaid half until I told her to keep the rest as she did so well.
But a lot of people now want to go to uni but can’t afford it, and that’s not fair. It limits the lower class/working class, restricting them from accessing higher education and qualifications.
"But uni fees are effectively free . You only start paying back the loan when you start earning about £25K a year ,and then only a small fraction per year . Many will never earn enough to pay any back"
This was a comment by Golfforall on the school uniform grant topic. I hope he/she does not mind me using it but it answers your comment.
Also uni fees were free at one time but that was when far fewer people went to uni. Now everyone wants to go and not always to work hard for a degree in their chosen field, but sometimes to have 3 years putting off entering work and have a good time with their peers. This does happen in some cases. After all where in life will a degree on The Beatles or similar get you.
Lynibis I agree that it’s somewhat inclusive that student finance allows you to go to uni without having regular ‘debt’ from this, but it still puts many people off. People should have the option to go, just as they do with college/16-18 education. Many other countries have made university free and found this to be effective and successful so it’s not an unfeasible prospect.
lornaae I see your point. I guess it is just that people feel they shouldn't have to pay for an adults choices. I would love to get a degree as it was not even a possibility for me, but I doubt the taxpayer would be happy for me to do so for free. I used to do loads of evening classes to stretch my mind and mix socially but even at oap prices they are now out of my reach.
Lynibis this is not true

Of course we need to pay for higher education you can have free education until 19 by going to college. Am fed up of everyone asking for hand outs we pay 91 NI a week and over 300 in tax. And still then can't get doctors appointments. If people won't a good job and need further degrees pay your way most of university students end up working in mc Donald's or local supermarket anyway these days.
Because going to university is a choice, I don't see why students should go there for free without paying a single penny. However, I do feel that £9k is far too much. I would say half of that would be more reasonable.
I think having free education up until the age of 19 is fair enough.
I went to uni when there was no fees. Didn't pay a penny. didn't come out with 1p in debt. So who did pay for it back in the day? And if universities were able to offer free education for decades or maybe even hundreds of years (how long has uni been a thing?) why after Tony Blair came to power were fees introduced? and why did these jump so high as I can assure you it wasn't 9k a year back in the day. I was meant to go back to do my MA and Phd after I had saved up the money but didn't due to life and mortgages getting in the way. I think there should be any fees because most degrees are quite useless. Harsh truth but truth none the less. Thank goodness I didn't have pay for mine as it has been no use at all. Learn a trade if you can is my advice.
definitely agree university fees are rising every year and for some people it is not worth it
