Sometimes, a black screen happens because Windows 10 will lose its connection with the display. Using the Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B keyboard shortcut can restart the video driver and refresh the connection with the monitor. ... Then press the power button again to restart.
Have you held the power button in until it goes off then restarts itself? Might need an update?
You should be able to get into 'Safe Mode' and then do a 'Startup Repair'. Getting onto safe mode depends on your machine but usually you can press and keep tapping either F5 or F8, if F5 doesnt work reboot then try F8. basically just keep tapping either key as soon as you switch it on
Maybe the resolution is wrongly set?

It could be any one of several reasons, one possibility, not already mentioned, is it's overheating and switches off to prevent serious damage, overheating is usually caused by dust accumulating round the fan and air exit vents. You can try, if you've got a hose on vacuum cleaner placing the hose against the vents (input and output) on laptop which will suck out dust.
I occasionally vacuum my laptop in the above way (while it's running) to prevent the accumulation of dust etc.
neo1 BonzoBanana davidstockport thanks for suggestions but nothing worked, I think it's the laptop doctor tomorrow
This I found might solve the problem: If your Windows 10 PC reboots to a black screen, just press Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard. Windows 10's normal Ctrl+Alt+Del screen will appear. Click the power button at the bottom-right corner of your screen* and select “Restart” to restart your PC. ... Your computer will restart normally with no more black screen.
*That power button is a circle with an upright line through the upper part. The full screen should be in blue and white.
Yeah I'm back up and running, managed to save all my pictures and important stuff, now just got to remember all my logins
neo1 I took it to local repair man (computer shop in town has permanently closed). There was a trojan on hard drive - he thinks from corrupted update and he managed to save the items I wanted saved, but I lost my word/excel. It's like a new machine - now putting all info/settings back
