Do You Still Use Your Local Libraries?

Other

I used to use libraries a lot, but it seems like they’ve now become uninhabited buildings, where no one seems to step foot into anymore unless they need access to a toilet free of charge

Reading one certainly one of the cheapest hobbies I ever had, as I never got fined for bringing the books back late

What is the state of your local library?

As for my local library, you get people going in (members) just to use the computers. I hardly ever see anyone actually reading any of the books.

Yes it seems to be the same for my libraries, although there are certainly fewer people using the computers these days too

No. It is because the local library is not local and need to use public transport to go there, each time 3.00. I can get books from that amount of money.

Also the last one I have been in had not many books in my interests, hobbies...

indeed, and you can often find that someone is giving away free books in the local area - loads f people in my neighbourhood often leave books outside for people to help themselves to

I rarely leave a charity shop without a book or two.

No I don't because my 'local' library is a mile walk away (so it's a 2 mile round trip), plus they don't really stock any books I want to read and when I did used to use it I was ordering all kinds of books from the storage department that were not out on the shelves anyone. One day they kept my books behind the counter when I went to get them, so I had to ask. They said they did it was they wanted to see the person who was ordering these books. That was a bit weird I thought. Just because I don't read chick lit or harry potter. They wanted to talk to me and ask me why I was ordering books on gender and even for eg, James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time. They seemed surprised that someone was an autodidact in this day and age. After that I didn't feel right ordering anymore as I felt they were watching me, so I just ordered them second hand off the net now.

Lol almost sounds like they’re gathering intelligence...or perhaps they were bored with nothing better to do

I think libraries are wonderful places but have to admit to not using them as an adult. Books I love are so cheap on my kindle and it is less hassle than the return trip to town. Anything I want to look up and I can ask my friend Alexa or google. I think everyone should make the effort to take their kids to libraries and instil a love of books and reading.

I agree. I used to love getting engrossed in a good book, and let the imagination run wild. It doesn’t seem like kids get to experience the same things these days, which is a shame

I used to move a lot and I have around 20 library cards which are still valid 👍 My bookshelves are breaking but I still still love few libraries in my current area

It’s good that you’re keeping the libraries alive! A lot get closed for underuse, so the secret is to use them

I take my children to the library very often as I know that they will more likely read (at least then ollder one) if they choose themselves.

That’s good. It’s better they get into books rather than have their eyes glued to a tablet or fixed to a computer

No, I really don't. I did when I had little ones because of the toddler groups and storytime sessions and because the whole check-a-book out thing with small ones was quite exciting. Now mine have school libraries they utilise and for me I'll generally either buy a book second hand from ebay or buy it for my kindle.

This is going to sound terrible but I’d have no idea where my local library is.

Also with charity shops being so cheap I’d probably just buy books there less hassle returning them!

Lol I’m sure you’re not the only one. A lot of library buildings were sold off, so your local council may have a new site for a library, but it’ll be way smaller, and perhaps attached to a centre/citizens advice bureau/job centre. There are so many places that offer cheap books, the library services do indeed seem to have become redundant

They just need to move with the times. We have posters about not-terribly-well-known-or-popular local authors visiting.....I think a poster promising 'free wi-fi and we'll bring you coffee' would attract infinitely bigger crowds....
