Using a Mobile When Driving. What Should the Punishment Be?
Ask a Question
It's an absolute bugbear of mine and it needs to be stopped as it's so dangerous.
What do you think that the punishment for using a mobile phone while driving should be?
I would go for an instant ban, even if it's only for a week or so, and then it should be doubled every time there is a subsequent offence.
This would soon stop the idiots.
Chop of their hands and gouge out their eyes, that should do the trick. Oh no, sorry we are not in 1286.
Punishments are not severe enough though. Those who kill or cause life changing injuries through negligence should be banned for life.
If caught using phones, as you say instant ban, but I would go further. Car driven to a pound and kept there at owners expense. I don't think there would be a 2nd or 3rd time!
I would say a good high serious fee that is hardly affordable, when a high fee comes along, alot of people start to behave... Noone wants to be in dept.
I very much agree. I just dont get drivers who use their phone - just pull over if it is so important!
A high fine is all well and good but rich people will still arrogantly flaunt the law. A £200 fine for example is nothing to a celebrity so they won't care. To someone like myself it is more than a week's wages.
Honestly people are so "addicted" to their phones the only thing I can see working for some would be technology that prevents drivers using phones. Personally I have different ring tones for different people and if I get a call I think is important either my passenger will answer or I will pull over
It is amazing the amount of people who still think it is OK to use their mobile whilst driving. Every time that I'm out I seem to notice at least one guilty party. Any of the ideas - ban, impound, larger fines would help. I think what would worry many people more would be the threat of losing their phone. Crush that by the roadside or donate to a charity,
Great idea if the punishment was losing phone for a while that would really make people think twice
Lynibis Yes you are right. They would probably have a spare just for the car. Some people are so bloody minded that nothing seems to stop them.
You would loose everything on your phone contacts photo a lot of people have attachments to phones Lynibis
Imnotcheap Yes, that is why I didn't think that would work. I would not want my personal info in the hands of anyone, even the police, let alone charity shop etc and I do not know how to wipe it clean, which is not workable as they cannot leave someone without all their contacts, medical, banking etc.
Big question is how often people get caught. When people regularly do something wrong and get away with it they feel like they always will
blacklabrador I agree. I think that an instant ban would be the way to go. A fine wouldn't make much difference to people who have the cash.
