I've got no real problems with vegetarians or vegans although the food is not my bag. But my cousin has started going out with someone who classes himself as a vegetarian (who eats fish every so often ) and it seems that he's had a couple of words with her daughter and suddenly she wanted to become a vegetarian out of the blue.

Ann1984 would be a bit weird if you did have an issue with it. Why do you think of it as preaching? Do you think anyone speaking up for a cause is preaching?

Viridun depends on the cause they preach about. Personally I don’t think it should be forced on a child like some do my neighbours kids look awful no nutrition just pale looking. And I have felt awful when they ask for a sweet but can’t give because vegan if I had them at my house I would give what ever they asked for

Ann1984 Haha so is it preaching when you don't agree with it? What do you think about meat eating being forced on kids? There's definitely more overweight meat eating kids in the uk than there is malnourished vegan kids

Viridun good sources of proteins come from meat not artificial iron kids have a choice too same as adults

Ann1984 Haha shifting the goalposts a bit there. But the healthiest sources of protein are legumes, beans, pulses etc. You can get plenty of iron from plants, where do you think the animals get it from? Haha. Also seems like you focus on choices isn't taking the animals preferences into account very much!

Ann1984 I'll agree it's easier to just dismiss/ignore/make jokes about it. But it's never too late to confront it and see if it really reflects your morals. We could do with a bit more empathy in the world!

Viridun I used to live in a household where there was a couple of vegetarians and I had to eat non-meat food every 4 out of 6 weeks on Sundays. It was quite horrible tbh as the vegetarians served up nasty food.

At least they looked forward to my moussaka

TheChimp Well sorry you had such terrible cooks for roommates, I'm sure you could cook some far better meals for yourself though. I used to love my meat but it just wasn't worth it when I weighed up what had to happen for it to get to my plate.

Viridun It's a lot worse in normal nature.

I don't agree with some of the practices when it comes to slaughtering animals in this country, but when you see crows pecking out the eyes of alive felled sheep who can't move, people might have a different attitude about things.

TheChimp It's not nature vs slaughterhouses man, it's slaughterhouses vs fields of veg/legumes/beans.

Imnotcheap Everyone loves meat mate, vegans included. Some things are just more important than your tastebuds

Viridun There are many ways to contribute to the environment and animal welfare without not eating meat or becoming vegan. Such as buying and sourcing foods locally.

flipside Actually going vegan is far more effective than buying locally. Obviously buy local where you can, but what you eat is much more important than where it's from generally. (also I'm sure you're not implying that there's better things for animal welfare than not killing them for food? Haha)

Viridun Going vegan is far more effective. But buying locally isn’t at all ineffective as you’re implying. And there are more pressing matters at hand than worrying about not killing domestic animals that are bred for food, yes.

flipside I think we are agreeing, going vegan is the most effective, but you should also eat as locally as you can! You can worry about multiple things at once, but I'd also hope that most people aren't contributing to the other issues as much as they are to killing animals
