CANUTE (1016-1035)
Jointly reigned with Edmund (Ethelred's son) but Canute became sole king when Edmund died. He married Emma of Normandy, the widow of Ethelred II and stepmother of Edmund. She was still only 30 after 15 years of marriage to Ethelred.
Canute already had a wife, daughter of an Elderman from the North who had been murdered by Eadric at Aethelred’s command. (Both sons were blinded and died of their injuries). The marriage was not blessed by the church and therefore when he married Emma the churchmen ignored his existing marriage and considered the one to Emma to be the lawful marriage.
Both women had two sons and before Canute died he insisted that his oldest son be his heir, this was Harold by the original wife, but 5 years later when Harold died Emma’s oldest son by Canute became King. A fictionalized account but with much truth was portrayed in Vikings Valhalla TV series.
Some thought that **** could turn back tide but humility persuaded him to prove other to his courtiers. He knew he had no command over the elements and would get his feet soggy. 
MelissaLee1 absolutely but some peop!e still think he genuinely thought he could do it! I was taught that at school but to be honest not sure if correct version was ever recorded.

MelissaLee1 I didn't bother with a picture because they all seem so bad from that time and the rest are just best guesses. One thing I can say for sure is that he was a lot more handsome in Vikings Valhalla than in any pictures I have seen lol.
Wow tgats interesting. I know nothing about king canute apart from from something to do with sandcastles
Jerseydrew actually Sweyn Forkbeard (Canute's father) was a Viking King of England but was only declared king on Christmas Day 1013 and died early February 1014 after just 5 weeks. As he was never actually crowned he is discounted in History as a true king of England. On his death his other son Harald became king of Denmark but when he died Canute took that throne as well, so was King of two countries for a time. Although Canute was one of our earliest kings many people do not know much of him even though he ruled for nearly 20 years. Although he took the throne as a barbaric Viking raider he was worthy king as he allowed the English nobility to keep their titles and lands and was a wise ruler.
