Virtual Reality Tourism?

Ask a Question

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-54658147

it can’t replace the real thing, but I can see this kind of thing taking off, particularly for people who may want to tour historic buildings, etc.

would you pay for something like this?

I wouldn't pay for it, but there are places that are closed to the public that I would be happy to view virtually. Such as Hashima Island (aka Gunkanjima) in Japan, which you can visit, but most of its closed off to the public due to safety reasons - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@32.6280054,129.7379019,3a,75y,197.39h,109.77t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sZnzGYITlem8qsWoiuNWrjg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656?hl=en

I think I would as I know that the National Trust and certain Museums are struggling so I would look at this like a donation. Similar to the donation I made to a couple of theatres who put things on virtually.

When my son was younger, I used to get Gifts from https://www.nhmshop.co.uk/up-to-50-off-gifts.html?p=3 as he was obsessed with dinosaurs 🙂

I don’t think it’s the same as reality. It’s as close as I guess but the whole point of tourism is to go see it in person

I think it would be quite good for certain places you not allowed to visit or places with limited visitation.

Ooh, this sounds interesting. What a cool concept! I wouldn't pay for it, though. There again, I wouldn't pay for regular travel either with the job situation as bad as it is. You're so right that lots of people may see VR travel as valuable and be willing to pay for it.

If you have a VR headset there are 360 videos on youtube of some places so you can do this for free. Lots of walking videos on youtube. I watched one yesterday going around Sorrento in 4k it wasn't 360 but its quite nice to watch as a background video while you do other things. I have a tablet on my exercise bike and often watch cycle journey videos and it almost seems like I'm cycling that journey myself on my exercise bike.

It’s definitely a good alternative for the moment. We are pretty lucky that we do have options to keep up entertained

As someone who hates flying this sounds pretty interesting

It's not as good as seeing it in real life but if it was somewhere I'd really like to see I would as I know so many places are struggling. A few quid to these now may mean that one day we'll be able to travel to see them in the future and they won't be closed off.
