Waitrose Brings Back Original Toilet Rolls after Customer Revolt

In the News

We are seeing shrinkflation with everything nowadays, with both food and drink, but waitrose had bitten off more than they could chew with its customers when they reduced the size of --------toilet rolls

This is one thing they deemed unacceptable , reducing a roll from 240 sheets to 190 and changing the material , in lieu of , or is that loo ?, the original bigger and stronger rolls

There was a torrent of one star reviews over this and customers kicked up a stink, literally,

To try to maintain their reputation Waitrose relented and brought back the original

The customers 'wiped' the floor with waitrose and there was a clear message ' You can change anything but don't mess with our toilet rolls'

What do you think of this?+20 points

It's strangely managed Waitrose as they seem to refuse to be competitive on pricing but are now giving away free coffee without a purchase. I guess you still have to have a waitrose card not sure but seems like a goodwill gesture that will cost them dear. Maybe they should be lowering a few prices. Sometimes I go into Waitrose (to get the free hotdrink) and before you had to buy something and normally all I can find to buy at a reasonable price is 1 or 2 items so that is pretty much all I buy. I actually think M&S is a lot cheaper for many things and I personally think the quality of M&S is better too but it is nice to go into Waitrose occasionally but I'm scratching my head why they are still surviving on the high street.

BonzoBanana They nearly went 'down the pan' concerning the toilet rolls B , but had the sense to listen to the customers, the coffee seems like a sweetener to excuse their higher prices though

BonzoBanana I am not very good at economics but wonder if they get the coffee for next to nothing from the supplier (or at cost), hoping folk will drink it and then buy it. Maybe cheaper than expensive tv advertising. I have never had a Waitrose coffee, prefer to relax at home after shopping. However my store of choice is Sainsbury's though I have Waitrose in walking distance I only use it for emergency.

BonzoBanana Waitrose have always had great offers but not widely publicised. They only stopped the coffee during the pandemic as touching the buttons could spread the disease.

Lynibis we have been known for my husband to pop in get our coffee to take to the waterfront or in the car overlooking the sea. Go back in and shop after enjoying the coffee.

Pjran Normally when in Waitrose I have a good look around so can see their current offers. The main Waitrose I use is the Sherborne one which is 7 miles away. Sherborne has both the supermarkets Yeovil doesn't have which is Waitrose and Sainsburys and its a nice little town centre for the occasional look around. I don't see a lot of great offers in Waitrose and even their budget Essential range is more expensive than value ranges elsewhere.

I hate Waitrose but have one nearby so use it occasionally. I see what I can only assume are well off people with trollies full of expensive items and I feel like saying 'hey you can get that that and that much cheaper elsewhere.' It's as if they would sooner pay more than be seen in a cheaper store. Store snobbery.

Lynibis I agree with you there L, And i think the higher prices offset what it costs to dole out the free coffee , as long as they are using instant and not using expensive beans 🤔

It does show that there is some people power, that is a big reduction in number of sheets which seemed a little too much.

jms19 I would say at least an extra four trips less to the throne in each roll J 😀

Majority of there stores are places in the areas which is more well off obviously for people who shop there is just a normal shop. A family friend works there so handy to get discount but rarely as not know what they offer that’s even worth the hassle.

I get my toilet roll from the aptly named 'Proper Job' and it is £3.25 for 18 luxury rolls. It's the cheapest around here and a year or two back you could buy 2 for £5.

Waitrose and m&s are on par cost wise. I use waitrose purely as we've the coop and a couple of franchises so no decent supermarkets. I'm jealous of the prices others have

Cushelle have done this too! We get the ones with 32 rolls if on offer, yes the tissue is softer but they have now changed it and are much thinner even if it’s still 3 layers! They tear more easily meaning you will be using more 🤦🏻‍♀️

We also get the packs of 8 that are much bigger in size. We stock up from Costco as family shops there once a week lol
