Good on Waitrose, bet they'll gain a lot more customers, as I will certainly not be buying chlorinated chicken
I certainly wouldn't consider it, but if it's cheaper than normal chicken, the less well off might not have the option but to buy it.
And then we've got the hormone injected beef.
TheChimp, thankfully do not eat beef. Tbh we don’t really know what they put in our foods. Even though Waitrose are pricey, I will buy from them if elsewhere are selling chlorinated
ivenailedit You can't beat a good bit of beef with some horseradish, but I won't buy it from a supermarket because it's always ropey, has to be from a decent butcher (which my local one isn't 
) They say to support local businesses, but if they're total crap, why should I?
I can see Boris signing a deal with the US to allow rubbish meat in and it's a shame. But then again, we allow UK 'farmers' to treat their animals terribly.
TheChimp unfortunately most of the decent butchers closed down years ago. Shame as was fresher. Really hope BJ doesn’t allow it
Most UK supermarkets probably wouldn't stock it, but many takeaway restaurants would use it if it's cheaper than other types on the market. People could end up eating it without knowing, as you rarely know about the quality or source of ingredients used in restaurants. Although, the factory-farmed chickens that currently make up most of the sales in Britain aren't exactly that much better than chlorinated chickens.
Thats what i thought, it will enter the market without anyone knowing through takeaways.
Think was in the news awhile ago about how oblivious we are about restaurant, takeaway foods & ready meals. I seldom buy takeaways, ready meals & eat out in restaurants. If I do will steer clear of chicken dishes ACR
I always thought that the constant use of antibiotics on animals bred for their meat is the main cause of antibiotics not being effective on some humans and believe that this will continue in a downward spiral. Chlorinated chicken - well, what can you say. I believe as others do that Boris will bow to the pressure and this is the chicken we will all be eating in the future unless you can find somewhere that you trust not to do it. Waitrose is great to say no and local farmers selling their own meat should also be fine but the majority of people can't afford to buy from these outlets and so will have no choice. I do hope that someone is going to keep tabs on Waitrose and pull them up if they are found wanting! (Maybe I just have a suspicious mind) 
tumblespots once they’ve stated this would be silly for them to start selling, as Waitrose say they are keeping standards high & don’t want to ruin reputation. Strange, thought most of them get stock from same suppliers
ivenailedit That's a bit of an anomaly then, unless they all choose not to sell it as that must be the only way they can use the same supplier?
tumblespots, not sure if they do for chicken, but whenever there's a recall of certain foods, you realise that many of them use same suppliers
Don't think the issue is so much buying it in the shops as most people will probably leave it on the shelves anyway, more of the problem is once they allow it into the UK, it will end up in chicken products such as ready meals , ready made sandwiches, takeaways etc .
Agree Mango4, will be in everything if allowed. Think everyone has to boycott in order for them to stop importing it
Morrisons I think only have counter meat products from the UK and Ireland and use their own abattoirs which are monitored by camera at all times but as previously pointed out prepacked processed food could contain it and such manufacturers are under more pressure to drive down costs than the average consumer. A 2% price saving on buying £1 million of meat a year is £20,000, not to be sniffed at.
Uk standards for animal welfare are pretty low I'm sure but sadly there are many countries where they are far lower unfortunately. Eastern Europe can be pretty bad and the US seems to have a money talks approach where anything goes if there is a profit in it. Italy and Spain can be pretty horrific. I think the UK is probably on a par with France, Germany and similar countries.
If Covid 19 has taught us anything what with the disease coming from wet/wild markets in China and many outbreaks in meat facilities around the world we need to improve standards for meat and ideally reduce the level of meat we eat. Chicken is a very porous meat which has to be cooked thoroughly unlike beef which is non-porous and can be eat with a under-cooked red interior it wouldn't surprise me if there is a slim chance that chicken can carry the virus either uncooked through touch or even a slim chance in under-cooked food like beef if the animal is infected with the virus. It's hard to know but we are learning about the virus as we go and no doubt new information may contradict earlier advice. Maybe chlorinated chicken will turn out to be the meat most likely to destroy the covid 19 virus and then people will actively seek it out by choice. McDonalds burgers are so sterile and processed they will not rot quickly. It's like this 20 year old McDonalds burger sometimes they create these new processes to prevent wastage and extend the life and safety of the product, it maybe nutritionally rubbish but it won't decompose naturally.
BonzoBanana yuk about Maccy’s burgers, glad don’t eat it. Good point about wet markets, but it‘s not yet proven where COVID19 originated from. If anything that should teach them to have higher standards
From what I heard a laboratory in Wuhan was testing meat samples from wuhan markets and the person responsible for the tests infected herself and ended up dying, people tried to find the woman and the government claimed she was ok but her relatives couldn't contact her and it was more than likely the first case but others say it was just someone directly infected from meat from the market. Either way it came from Wuhan as that is the epicentre of the outbreak with meat from wild animals being responsible for the outbreak.
Wuhan is also downstream from the 3 gorges dam which many people claim is close to breaking point so there could be more news from that area soon. The dam breaking could effect 400 million people! International engineers are saying it is likely to collapse but Chinese engineers are saying its safe but that isn't very re-assuring considering what they can state is controlled by the government. Looking at all sources there does seem to be a real possibility it will collapse but certainly not a certainty.
China has a reckless reputation for safety standards both in food and engineering.
Blimey BonzoBanana you have a lot of knowledge. You’d have thought by now they’d know what caused COVID19. Will read up on the dam, as that sounds catastrophic
