Weedkiller

Ask a Question

Is anyone else finding that shop bought weedkiller is not as strong as it used to be? We have block paving, and the weeds are an ongoing battle. We've started making our own with white vinegar, salt, and washing up liquid. It's working much better. It kills them off quickly.

They are definitely less powerful, changed & tougher regulations and formula is the reason why , the chemicals used that actually did the job first time every time are now banned

Thing is Roundup for eg, according to google:

Roundup's main active ingredient, glyphosate, is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as probably carcinogenic to humans, though regulatory bodies like the US EPA and Health Canada maintain it is unlikely to pose health risks at standard labelled usage levels. That puts me off weed killers in general. I, too, use white vinegar, but mostly I just pull them out. It's a never ending job.

Sherrifffroggy, yes, you're right there. It is never ending, especially in the warmer months with a mix of heat and rain. They just keep appearing. The vinegar mix seems to work well and its safe. The only downside is there's a strong smell of vinegar for a while.

I use weedol and It does not work. I spray, then they soon appear again. Waste of money. I used a home remedy years ago and that was the same but not sure what I used now. I may try your method.

Emerge11 I use 3 litres of white vinegar, 1 cup of very strong salt water and 3 tablespoons of washing up liquid. I put it in a garden pressure sprayer, its easier to apply.

Companies are trying to make everything cheaper while increasing prices so it wouldn't surprise me at all

Yes it's been absoulte rubbish , had to spray weeds 2-3 times this year, despite claims they kill weeds within 4 hours.

I try to avoid using weed killers wherever I can. With stubborn weeds, I follow what my mum used to do. I remove the weed above the ground, and if I can't get the roots out, I pour a pile of ordinary table salt on what's left. This completely dries the root up and shrivels them away.

AlysonC It's a good method but I try to avoid Salt as it salt damage concrete and brickwork and also damage the soil making it difficult to grow plants .

Here's the definitive list:

METHODS FOR REMOVING WEEDS WITHOUT WEED KILLER

  1. HARD SURFACES (Patios, Driveways, and Sidewalk Cracks)
  • Boiling Water: Boil a kettle and pour the hot water directly onto the weeds. It scalds the plant and kills it down to the root almost instantly.
  • Vinegar Spray: Mix 1 gallon of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, and optionally a cup of salt. Spray it on a hot, sunny day to dry out and destroy weed tissue within hours.
  • Salt: Sprinkle table salt or rock salt directly into cracks to dehydrate stubborn weeds.
  1. GARDEN BEDS AND BORDERS
  • Hand Pulling & Digging: Wait until after it rains when the soil is loose. Use a hand trowel or border fork to dig underneath the root system, making sure to extract the entire taproot so it doesn't grow back.
  • Hoeing: For young weed seedlings, use a sharp garden hoe on a dry morning to lightly scrape the surface and slice the weeds off from their roots. The sun will quickly wither the loose seedlings.
  • Mulching: Cover bare soil with a 2-to-3-inch layer of bark mulch, wood chips, or compost. This blocks sunlight and prevents new weed seeds from germinating.
  1. LAWNS
  • Regular Mowing: Routinely mow your lawn to chop off flower heads before weeds can drop seeds. Ensure your mower's mulch setting is turned off if weeds are actively seeding.
  • Targeted Extraction: Use a dedicated daisy grubber or a two-pronged weeding tool to pry out individual lawn weeds (like plantains or dandelions) from the root without tearing up large patches of grass.
  • Crowd Them Out: Fertilise your grass, overseed bare patches, and water deeply to encourage a thick, dense lawn canopy that naturally chokes out weeds.
  1. CLEARING LARGE OVERGROWN AREAS
  • Solarisation / Smothering: Lay down a heavy black plastic tarp or thick layers of cardboard over the area. Weigh it down with bricks and leave it for 4 to 6 weeks during the summer to bake and kill the vegetation and seeds below.

I watched a documentary a few years ago about poor men in Australia who were dying from regularly using weed killer at their workplace. I always thought they were poisonous. I don't use them at all

My husband is the one who uses the weed killer. I’m the one who digs out the weeds! I prefer to get to the root of the problem. Why do weeds grow whatever the weather but plants die? Who decides what is a flower and what is a weed? Good idea for the home solution especially when you have pets.

I never used weedkiller in my garden due to having a Hungarian Vizsla, l still do to this day get down on my knees with a very thin blade and dig them up..saying that l trim the edge of my lawn with scissors...there's no hope for me 🤪

I really hate weedkiller. It kills the plants but it also kills wildlife. I hate all poisons which is what weed killer is. They like rat poison should be bad as they are so bad for the environment. I had an argument with a local mp who claimed locally the stuff used wasn't damaging to the environment and animals or humans. This was despite signs up and the staff using it wearing full ppe. That was One of the many reasons I refused to vote for him in local elections

Commercial weed killer is bad for our wildlife. Please use some of the non-harmful methods mentioned in this thread. We all need to re-think if we’re to save our planet for future generations.

dawarwick I've got a pond in my garden and I would hate any weed killer to get into it and hurt the toads, frogs and newts
