telmel Oh I see where your coming from but I think its trust because otherwise couples will doubt each other and become jealous then they will feel unloved and not worthy. They're self confidence and self-esteem in themselves me get low.

Yes, it has to start with love otherwise you would surely not be in the relationship in the first place, or you shouldn't be. I agree with trust but would suggest loyalty as that really should encompass trust and fidelity.

But there really is not just one thing, it's a mix of lots of things.

It may sound petty but I could not be with someone who drank too much, smoked, swore like a trooper and squandered their money, so all the love and trust in the world could not make me overcome those vices.

stuartsmith544 I haven't had many friends in my life. The ones that I did. Their true faces came out in the end. I will not take my partner for granted and would want to make him happy and take care of him. Thank you!

Justshopping I know what you mean , I won a large prize on the postcode lottery in 2017 and trust me some of the people who I thought were friends turned out to be not nice people .

Trust, honesty and love. I could make a huge list of those to avoid, gambling and drinking excessiveply.

Pjran I completely agree with you. I guess you and your partner have to be stable and mentally okay. If you or your partner were abusive there's only so much one could take.

Along with trust it has to be being truthful. But then this is me in general, I can not stand people telling lies. They generally slip up in the end.

It takes more than one aspect to retain a solid relationship. Love, friendship, intimacy, trust, honesty, support, faithfulness & communication are all equally important.

Trust and consideration are two biggies. Even if you love someone, the relationship will become toxic without trust.

gerrykelly25 Absolutely true. It's really hard because I think everything plays a huge part in a relationship such as trust, consideration as you stated but also love itself, being supportive, being able to communicate and being honest.

For me it takes more than one thing to keep a relationship together. You need trust and honesty, but you also need to support each other, not take each other for granted, you need to communicate, there needs to be intimacy, which comes in many forms, you need to be faithful to each other, which involves more than just not cheating on each other, you need to stand up for each other, friendship is really important, sometimes you might need to compromise, you need to be committed to your relationship, you need to respect each other and you need love.

MrsCraig Absolutely. Reading everyones comment as well as yours makes me realise that it can't be just trust thats important there's many things that you stated that are equal to that. You said respect and I believe that its a huge part as well.

MrsCraig I agree. I guess it depends on individuals. How individuals handle the relationship. For example, they might have a bad day at work and may take it out on their partner without realising it.

MrsCraig correct as I've been with my wife 27 years and started to hit problems now. I hope I can get things sorted as I feel really low lately

Pppathome I'm really sorry to hear that. I think the pandemic and financial worries have caused a lot of relationship issues for people. My parents have been together for 48 years and have been through a lot in that time. For them communication was key and understanding how the other felt. I really hope you get things sorted.

No one has mentioned UNDERSTANDING yet, if two people can't understand each other, or no attempt is made to understand each other, then most relationships are doomed.
