Councillor Shares Photos Of Wheelie Bins Overflowing With Fresh Food After Panic Buying
After we saw empty shelves in supermarkets across the UK due to panic buying, photos of bins overflowing with fresh food have been emerging on social media.
Following the outbreak of coronavirus and subsequent nationwide lockdown, people cleared the shops of most things, before it turned out there was actually no need to.
A councillor in Derby has called people out for being wasteful in a pretty scathing tweet.
Sharing photos of fresh food put out for the bins, Lib Dem councillor Ajit Singh Atwal posted: "To all the people in this great city of ours in Derby, if you have gone out & panic bought like a lot of you have & stacked up your houses with unnecessary items you don't normally buy or you have bought in more food than you need, then you need to take a good look at yourself."
In the waste you can see full loaves of bread, packets of cooked meat and fresh fruit, all piled next to and in recycling bins - a clear sign that panic buying fresh food is quite clearly a pointless pursuit.
People weren't happy with the photos.
One person replied: "What a waste of food, it's amazing me how many ignorant people we have in this country... And how they managed to place one foot in front of another... God help us all..."
Another came up with a solution, saying: "They should be made [to] cook it and take it to a place where homeless know. They are going hungry and this food is better than none."

So frustrating. So many people have struggled to find stuff. Some people struggle to afford food. And all that gone to waste.
Wow what a waste them bananas look fresh most of it could have been frozen or they could of given out to elderly before it went off put note though there door and left on doorstep. That's what selfish buying caused
I agree with you - I honestly thought we may start to see this in a couple of weeks ahead but this madness is far too soon. This really is a kick in the teeth for vulnerable people who are struggling to find food. 
Absolutely nothing wrong with those bananas. If they didn't want it they could have donated it to food bank or kitchen.
This is appalling. Please encourage and spread the use of food sharing apps like Olio. I collect and eat myself at least twice a week. Food waste it should be a crime!
That's so sad
I had a Tesco delivery this morning(booked over a week ago),the driver confirmed how much people were spending in the store,sometimes up to £600 per household...

Hate seeing pictures of fresh food in the bins if people didnt bulk buy or if they donated the food it wouldnt have gone to waste.
Disgraceful. I struggle to understand how people think it's ok to rob supermarkets and then throw things away. Disgusting.

That's awful. I guess people don't think or don't want to draw attention to how greedy they were but how minimum they should have done was offer it up to a foodbank.
Im absolutely disguised with this. Im high risk and havnt been able to go to the shops or get a delivery. We are living of "if its" and completely running the freezer and cupboards down. If someone came and knocked my door with some food going outta date id snap their arm off for it and freeze it. Times like this we need to think of others not ourselves!
The loaves and bananas could have been used to cook bread and butter pudding, banana loaf or any number of things - turned into breadcrumbs and frozen, smoothies etc...Cooking is a nice thing to do with the children too. What a waste!
I did not panic buy...I could not get some stuff and I am sure some people bought so many eggs...soon the chicks will start to hatch in their homes
This makes my blood boil.
Our local Food Bank had to close last Wednesday because they couldn't get hold of enough food.
The majority of that food could have been frozen to avoid waste. Those bananas are absolutely fine! This food could have been donated to a food bank or to the elderly and vulnerable. This really annoys me! There are people that can't get food due to disabilities or because they can't afford to shop for shop and there are people throwing food away! It is absolutely sickening.
What a waste. A lot of that food could have been frozen - but I guess their freezers are already jam packed with other food. The bananas in the top picture look OK. Some of the worst offenders should be fined 
The huge amount of money wasted too and all the processing of that food to get it to the supermarket merely to be thrown out. What were they originally planning, to eat all that fresh food and then hibernate for 3 months. Why on earth would you buy a huge amount of short life food like that. I don't agree with panic buying but if you were going to do so most of your food should surely be long life food, dry food, tins, frozen etc unless you were buying fresh food to cook into meals which you could then freeze.
You see the best and worst of people in times like this.
Fasting and smaller portions seems to be beneficial to fighting the virus so I suppose in that regard its not a bad thing if stock now is slightly depleted. Autophagy seems to be a beneficial process for the immune system but its important to maintain electrolytes and essential vitamins. So I wouldn't worry too much if you are eating less than normal because of more limited access to food, most of us eat far too much anyway well beyond our nutritional needs and many eat more often when stressed. So annoying when fresh food is wasted though as that is the best food to eat especially organic with less depleted minerals and vitamins and more importantly less toxins that can suppress the immune system.
