When Life Gives You lemons...........

Other

Use them wisely with no waste. I buy a net of lemons every week and use them in so many ways.

Needed a tsp of grated rind for making fishcakes this week so was left with a naked lemon!

I use slices in my pukka flavoured teas, and juice or slices in the water I drink a lot of. Making lemonade is also a good one but not done so myself.

When I have grated, squeezed or sliced I use the remnants for cleaning chopping boards, wooden spoons etc, then throw them in the dishwasher to sanitise and fragrance or chop into small pieces and throw on garden to keep cats away!

Any other ideas for lemons or other foodstuffs?

You forgot the most important tip - freeze slices for Gin! There is another one - rub the remains of the lemon into granulated sugar then rub on to fingers to remove stains. (ink, polish etc)

How terribly remiss of me lol! Maybe because I don't drink apart from the odd Bailey's in coffee.

Could any fruit be more versatile? I wonder if I could try to grow a lemon tree!

Lynibis I have two that produce fruit in a conservatory - they do need a fair amount of warmth. Nothing better than taking one off the plant.

angemski that's it then I am going to give it a try I have a conservatory that gets incredibly hot. Would it need some sort of heat in winter?

Lynibis No because that's it's dormant time but it does need a special citrus plant feed in the Spring.

angemski LynibisI also have a lemon and miniature orange tree in my sunroom. They were from Aldi I think and were only about £15. I love watching the lemons grow and change colour. 🍋

gerrykelly25 The first one I bought was from Lidl and it gave up it's leaves like the best stripper.....and died. I then got a couple from a local garden centre and they have been amazing.

gerrykelly25 Haha! don't wish to brag......but they are whoppers! I've had the plants for about six years though and they need some serious support.

Store whole lemons in a sealed jar of water in the fridge. They will then yield a lot more juice than when first bought.

Alternatively

Submerging lemons in hot water for 15 minutes before you squeeze them will get you almost twice as much juice.

Good tips Johnny. I have seen tv chefs rolling the fruits back and forth with flat of hand to release the juice too. I must admit the lemons I buy don't seem to last very long and have been unsure whether to store in or out of fridge? Do you or angemski have the answer please?

Out of the fridge at room temperature a lemon will last about a week.

A whole lemon kept in a sealed plastic sandwich bag will last up to a month in the fridge.

They’re great for cleaning with, and I’ve found drops of the juice, even the rind, are good at getting find of stain. And I like to eat them too

I usually squeeze it into hot water and drink it in the morning. I’ve found it makes my stomach look less bloated. What’s your recipe for lemonade?

I have never made lemonade as I believe it takes a lot of sugar which I try to avoid. I guess there will be some recipes online though.

Try planting the pips in a little compost. Don’t water it every week, they are slow to grow but worth it in the end.

Lynibis looks like you have green fingers so I’m sure you’ll be lucky. Takes a couple of years before it produces fruit.

That's really good of you to use up all your lemons in different ways👍👍😊 lemon juice is a good face brightener .. just dab some over your face but please check incase you have sensitive skin.. also if you cut a lemon in half and dip into some sugar ..you will have a homemade facescrub 😍

Yes, I've done this with a pleasing result. I've tried muslin but find that coffee filters are the best way of decanting it when it's ready. I had a session at the start of the lock down and used up fruit that was not being eaten. My only excuse is that I hate not being busy so this filled the void.

angemski well done, I love the idea of this and wine making etc but not being a drinker it seems a rather fruitless (excuse the pun) exercise. My non drinking isn't anything puritanical or religious, I just don't like the taste of alcohol.

Lynibis I remember you mentioning this almost a year ago - just don't forget lemon and elderflower cordials.
