Why Do Cardigans No Longer Have Buttons/fastenings?

I have just been shopping and in one store could not find one single cardigan that buttoned up. What is the point if it is flapping around your front and you only have a blouse or t-shirt underneath.
I saw a lovely chunky long cardi with a hood, ideal for those days when a heavy coat is not needed, but I could just imagine having to keep wrapping it round me only to have it fall open again!
I have resorted to a belt when alone indoors but not very fetching if you have guests lol.
The cardigans without buttons are a fashion trend. I've got a few cardigans with buttons and a few without. I have to admit that I don't use the buttons on the ones that have them. I wear mine with only a t-shirt underneath and I don't find them flapping about and I never feel cold in them.
I would wear a fleece in the house or outside when a heavy coat isn't needed as it keeps me warmer.
I don't mind cardigans not having buttons.
I suppose I have always had buttons and if I am sitting watching TV the front is open if there are no buttons, so I get cold, especially in the winter. When I look at them in the shops they just somehow do not seem 'finished'. I guess like many things it is an age thing lol!
Lynibis I can understand that it would warmer to have the cardigan buttoned up, I don't really think about it as I wear fleeces in the house and keep my cardigans for when I go out. There are certain styles of cardigans, like waterfall cardigans, that would look strange with buttons on.
MrsCraig Yes I have a couple of those and also a very thin waterfall black jacket sort of suedette. They look nice with those clips that hold both sides together.
I have some with buttons and some without but find myself using the ones without buttons more if I’m just at home as it’s usually more my arms that are cold than the rest of me and I don’t want to overheat wearing one buttoned up. I find they’re usually thinner too if they don’t have buttons. I agree they don’t look finished without them though! I’d like buttoning them to be an option.
I’m not sure what they have in stock right now as I haven’t actually checked but Edinburgh Woollen Mill usually have a lot of nice button up ones. I usually get mine there when I do need a button up one and find they’re great quality.
The chunky one was lovely and I would have bought it if it had some sort of fastening. It was more for outdoors and I even toyed with the idea of sewing on poppers and some chunky fake buttons. But to be honest I felt I shouldn't need to.
Perhaps it's because buttons are a bit too complicated for some of the younger generation 
Many of who think if a button comes off a garment that's the end of its life. (I did try explaining to one why he had a button too many at the top of his shirt and a spare button hole at the bottom )
I must admit I didn't look at any men's cardies but I imagine they mostly come with buttons as they are probably not fashionable for the younger guys.
I must admit I have fallen foul of the wonky fastening of a blouse before now!
Lynibis I think (could be wrong) that most cardigans, for males, have zip fasteners nowadays. Not to be confused with a pull-over which doesn't have any opening at the front. Even this traffic cop didn't seem to know the difference:

I will definitely consider this if I buy one. But to be honest I prefer to buy items I don't have to them alter.
As I am on the large size, I like the waterfall cardigans as I never did the buttons up as it brought attention to my problem areas 
The buttonless cardi is trendy.......and it is manufactured in he sweat shops for less. Sad but true.
I knew money would come into it. Easier to make the items without buttonholes and adding buttons and saves on cost of buttons when you think in millions of items.

Thanks Ann that is a nice cardi, bit low necked but I sometimes wear a scarf.
I loved the one I saw in Matalan as it looked similar but went up to chin and had a hood, it therefore looked odd without a zip or buttons as it was like a coatigan.
With you on that Lynibis.There are so many nice buttons to be had as well so if handy with a needle you can customise.I don't always do buttons up..especially the bottom two lol but I do like the option and opportunity.
oh how fashion has changed, most people dont use them so can cut a cost of not including them, i guess the best thing to do if you see something you like is get the buttons and sew them yourself.

It's great but I did get a nice one the other day and I imagine I might need the size that is out of stock lol. But thank you, it would be nice in navy profit I seem to go for grey.
