Why Are so Many Old Topics Being Resurrected
Other
I think it is good to check if your topic has already been online fairly recently otherwise it would get silly with repeats, but so many are over a year old and were often posted and commented on by many members no longer around.
It is strange to find a topic that is very old suddenly having a reply as if it were written yesterday. It also pushes back up to date topics.
I see no reason why a topic similar to a very old one cannot be repeated in a fresh way.
I so miss Cats v Dogs , Eastenders v Coronation Street , Cadburys v Mars - NOT !
Unfortunately we now have the same 3 or 4 members posting 2 "News items" each on a daily basis , and then replying to each other to ensure the "popular post" points criteria is met .
I somehow don't believe this was the Latest Deals team's intention when the "points for chat " were changed a few months back ?
Bring back Cats v Dogs !
What's even worse is one of them, doesn't either bother to read the "NEWS" articles linked to, and makes up a story and headline slightly resembling what the article is about, or actually thinks a supposedly wealthy person who died in 2014 died RECENTLY. Someone commented that the title was misleading - but for another reason.
It appears more than coincidence "News item posters" rescue each other's totally uninteresting "News" items just before they're due to go down the plughole. (page three) After being ignored by other members for quite some time.
One member harrasses anyone who dares to disagree with him - that's one reason I didn't bother mentioning that 2014 wasn't recently.
davidstockport Obviously I totally agree (and have said so many times ) . I can sympathise (in a way ) with said chat posters but it is surely not what Latest Deals was designed for ? Want a chat ? surely there are numerous sites to do that ?
I would prefer that "Chat" were left to genuine members who want advice on deals , best way to get cheapest contracts etc .
Leave a loophole and there are certain members who will spot it and abuse it .
Sorry folks , I'm not jealous , sympathetic maybe . But I'm afraid this 2 chat subjects every single day is not what a "Deals " site should be about ?
Genuine questions and requests for advice are being swamped (and disappear off the bottom of the "Chat " page) by the same few "usual suspects " posting and replying to each others topics all to gain a few points .
Golfforall I'm very sympathetic actually, not saying all, but several of the two a day "news reporters" must be very hard up if they feel the need to generate a few pence (in points) by trying to find "news" most of which is reserved by the press for "No News Day".
They spoil it for each other - most members tend to ignore them all.
I've noticed recently that a lot of new topics seem to be disappearing after being reported as duplicates- often as "duplicates" of much older, inactive topics, or topics that they are only vaguely similar to.
I think maybe this is deterring members from starting new topics, and so people are seeking out older topics to comment in.
I've never posted a chat topic myself as I've always been happy just commenting in other people's, but on several occasions recently I've gone to look at a notification of a reply I've received and found the topic has gone. Instead I'm taken to an old topic that no one has commented in for a year or more, or a topic that simply shares a keyword with the newer post but isn't the same.
I think it's going to get hard for anyone to post anything new if that continues.
Yes A i have noticed a few posts disappearing this way, including some of mine
This cannot be moderators searching and enforcing this alone , its too time consuming, it has to be someone reporting the post , sometimes i suspect out of spite
I have had to appeal to get some of mine reinstated, inconveniencing the LD moderators
Maybe LD will take note of what is happening and try not to have so many removed for the wrong reason
Have you noticed how interesting chat is getting now , its more topical on things that matter and going on right now, not this versus that as mr G just pointed out
More people are joining in and contributing as the subjects are interesting and things that concern people
I hope the 'gang' (2 or 3 people ) of none or rare contributors dont succeed in getting the way chat works changed, they are only jealous and spiteful that some on LD enjoy their daily get together and give enjoyment to each other
Sorry to use your post to say these things L , i agree with what you are saying about old posts, if you mention anything in a new one that is slightly similar to the old it can be removed and i also think thats unfair
Another thing annoying is if the word government or church is in your post it can also be removed
I posted about churches being used as hostels for holidaymakers, nothing to do with actual religion, and i had my post removed , i thought this a little over the top
That didnt take long for the gang to regroup , they are both here now Battyman and Bobin
That actually answers my question angelik, maybe chat topics are being merged and you are taken to the old one, or newer one deleted. But I was sure guidelines were ok with an old topic being repeated if it was a year or so, and it doesn't have to be exactly the same, just maybe a bit similar. Besides which, some newer members may not have seen the old post and would like to comment.
telmel it would appear the bots are taking words too literally and not seeing beyond into the context. Even moderators may not bother reading the whole post but just see the offending word.
No worry, by all means use my post. That is another thing that bothers me about chat, if someone veers off subject (as all conversations do in real life) it is often closed down. I think that stops the topic broadening and becoming even more interesting.
Lynibis Its usually when someone comes on the post complaining about the way others use chat and as you say nothing to do with subject (as is happening now L)
Then when the conversations become heated LD lock the post, then the perpetrators have achieved what they set out to do and win , leaving all the relevent comments and posters lost for words , literally
So unfair but it is happening more often now
telmel I've noticed in the past some of your posts disappearing then reappearing. Unfortunately I think many people give up on it and don't appeal the removal of their topics like you did.
I agree about chat topics being locked, I find that frustrating. So many interesting discussions on here get locked due to the bad behaviour of usually just one or two people, which ruins it for the poster of the topic and all the members who contributed and wanted to keep the discussion going.
angelik I suspect many posts are removed because even if initially they aren't politcal or religious there is at least one "News item reporter" who will sabotage the oppositions topic by turning it political, to try to eliminate the opposition. and also attacks other posters...that can be anyone who disagrees with them.
Fortunately sometimes the topic is just locked and lets those who care to look see how they behave, very childishly at times. Sending reworded nursery rhymes or irrelevant GIFS to others (by tagging), should IMO be considered as harrassment.
Leannexxx Yes L , he is trying to get this locked like the others, he cannot help himself
I wont comment any more as its unfair if it does get locked as its not my post and not fair to L
I would apologise for his behaviour L as he will not
Its a good thing LD lock the posts now instead of removing them, at least others can see the unfair comments being posted and they are there for prosperity so they should be an embarrasement to the perpetrators , but i wouldn't hold my breath
Regarding the aforementioned nursery rhyme he mentioned i can only say when someone is spitting his dummy out of the pram a nursery rhyme is the only thing to placate the baby
I rest my case m'lord
telmel Nothing wrong with a little righteous indignation here and there .Better by far than the age old politics of envy and running off to the headmaster's office every five minutes.
"That didnt take long for the gang to regroup , they are both here now Battyman and Bobin" telmel
Once again showing how you edit posts (by adding to them - or sometimes removing offensive sections to try to make others who object to look foolish) and use childish insults. At least you can't change your name again. It's only allowed once. I feel sure most will recall who you were before you changed your user name.
Some might also remember a troll who plagued this forum with GIFS some might also remember someone (not me) telling him that there was no need for a space after a word and before a comma. Perhaps just a very strange coincidence.
I advise anyone objecting to offensive comments to screen shot them before objecting - or quote it in full (as above).
telmel If you are referring to me I haven't said anything to get this topic locked. If you think copying and pasting an offensive comment before it was edited out. (it's happened several times before) Is trying to get this topic locked you think wrongly. You will find the copy of it still exists although the original doesn't.
That should tell the person who posted the childish and offensive comment - and probably some others something.
Leannexxx How do you know you don't know them personally?
Are you entirely sure that one of the numerous David's you must know isn't me?
I'm just trying to explain that many of the people you think you would like to know personally... from what they tell you online, you'd probably no longer want to know if you did meet them.
Leannexxx I will reply to whom I please especially if I am involved in their comment. If your new found crony has given you the idea that people can dictate who can and can't comment he was wrong again. If however anyone replies to you to harass, you can report the posting and let those in charge decide.
telmel I have to disagree (hope I'm allowed to) the last topic that I saw had been locked, was presumably because the OP decided to convert a childrens nursery rhyme into an insult (not even a reply) and tagged the person insulted so he wouldn't miss it.
It's easy to find locked posts if anyone disbelieves me.
telmel I know you find it difficult to post anything sensible but what kind of reply is that to a sensible posting?- Some might call it trolling or even spamming this topic with totally inappropriate gifs.
I prefer old topics being resurrected what annoys me when people dont search the chat topic and create a new chat topic for a chat that already exsists. Sometimes you'll find a full page of the same chat topic and that really bugs me
Yes that can be a problem C , but who is going to go back a year or so to search for an old topic that is similar ?
If you spot an interesting article in the news you assume it is new , but the newspapers are guilty of resurrecting old news sometimes, and you dont always see a publishing date
telmel dont have to go a year back, go to topic section and type in seach bar if topic doesnt exsist then create a new one if not then just comment on one of the other chat topics already created
Chelsea0121 give it 2weeks and the Halloween questions will appear followed by Xmas @lynbis I give up with chat to be honest itβs just not the same most mine get locked due to snowflakes
telmel Surely if the article CLEARLY states a person died in 2014 - and you describe his death as recent. (the newspaper didn't) Even you can't blame the newspaper for that. It really indicates to anyone noticing it that you haven't read the article properly before linking to it.
I didn't mention it on the topic, I merely agreed with a person who found another thing misleading, because I'm utterly sick and tired of you accusing me of finding fault, forgetting I can only find faults where they exist.
Something equally as bad is that there have been around 5 or 6 Christmas topics over the last couple of weeks, and we are only in September!
Ann1984 I think we should be getting Halloween and Bonfire Night out of the way first. THEN Christmas.
I'm guilty of this. If a topic already exists I'd rather comment on an older post than start a brand new chat. The number of new Chat topics created each day is usually fairly limited. New posts tend to linger on the first few pages of Chat for a while unless they get little or no replies.
ACR I did the same - I commented on an old post about life hacks instead of creating a new one as in the past Iβve had a chat refused for being a duplicate.
I know I have updated a couple of mine where there has been an update in the news, so not sure if I am the guilty party.
Although I must admit I found it funny the other day reading whether I celebtrated St Patrick's day, I had to check my calendar
That is sensible, I often go back to one of my old ones to add an extra thought I have had, nothing wrong with that.
I think what started me on this was a year old comment being answered in a way that makes you think they haven't realised it is old.
When I bring one back I usually start my comment with something like 'I have come back to this topic because..........'
PS I wasn't particularly moaning about it, just wondering why it was happening.......
The St Patrick day was like that, which is what confused me, time flies by so fast!
I wouldn't have been surprised if it had come around again @Lynibis
I don't think there's anything wrong with revisiting an old topic if you have something relevant to update/add to it- whether it's on your own or someone else's topic. It makes sense to do that really.
But I think some people have been put off from starting a new topic due to the amount that get reported as duplicates these days, and are commenting on old topics that are only just similar to what they actually wanted to chat about. In that situation, I think people should be able to start a fresh discussion.
Sometimes we have to go backwards to come forward surely? I love scouring all the chat sometimes purposefully start at the back or in the middle.
The advantage of course of posting "News items " even if several days old is they are unlikely to be duplicates (it's in the name, news !) ? As the usual suspects well know ?
Is it not wrong / suspicious that 60% (give or take) of all Chat topics are posted by 4 or 5 members (out of a million or so members ) ?
Similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago . Contactless limit being raised to Β£100 in October (Fact) Obviously a matter of concern/discussion ?
Was removed as a previous "Chat post " back in January (I believe ) referred to it as being a possibility in the next budget . I did comment on that one (to bump it up ) , but it didn't retain prominence for very long as the incessant pointless "in the news " topics swiftly relegated an important topic to the abyss .
