Why Wood Burning Stoves Are Facing A Fuel Ban From 2021
The new rules are cracking down on air pollution and will affect anyone with a wood burner, stove or open fire in the UK.
The most polluting fuels burned in household stoves and open fires will be phased out from next year to clean up the air, the Government has said.
Owners of wood burners, stoves and open fires will no longer be able to buy coal or wet wood to burn in them, under a ban to be rolled out from 2021.
Until recently this would have afftected me but since the move we no longer have a log burner.
I was thinking of you when I saw this! What did you do with the one you won? Did you sell it? We have one but havenβt heard anything about legislation here so far.
Because of the design it wouldn't fit our last house. A friend of ours was building a house and we gave it to him. When we left our last house we decided that we would prefer not to lug tonnes of logs about so we have an electric fire here. Personally I think overpopulation is the thing that will cause the end of the world not undue log burning... Have a great day gerrykelly25

Wood burning stoves are the least of anyone's worries.
My first thought was that around here not many people have access to a gas line so gas isn't an option. You have oil or calor tanks for heating possibly with log burners as a backup. Some only have the log burner or open fire. Banning logs and/or coal is not a good move and gives kiln dried log providers free reign to hike up the prices. Pollution from cities, as you say, is another matter again. They (government) will hit those that are easier to attack, it isn't as easy to attack a whole city!
I know folks in other countries who live off selling wood for stoves, so if this nonsense happened to them too, it would dramatically affect their businesses.
Besides, not many are able to use stoves in U.K. due to the structure of the building/apartment (houses should be fine). tumblespots
Rockman I think this will only apply to the UK, or even just parts of the UK. The rest of the world does exactly as it pleases!
tumblespots Wet wood (aka green or unseasoned wood) contains moisture which, when burned, creates more smoke and harmful particles of air pollution than dry wood.
Wet wood does not need to be kiln dried to become dry wood. You can just keep it in the dry for a season or two.
I think most people with a log burner prefer to use dry wood anyway as it leaves less tar on the wood burner glass.
Johnny I think you might be right about the residue on glass, we used to buy kiln dried logs and the glass needed a lot of regular cleaning.
tumblespots This is spot on. We only bought dried wood for this reason. Any wood from our garden had to be left to dry out for quite some time in our garage.
Ceebers We would have used more 'normal' wood but didn't have access to it. I cost a fortune! 
Yeah they conveniently miss the fact that it is Benzene from CARS that has been causing all these OCD'S , mental health issues and illnesses - BENZENE can actually change your DNA!
Then there is the SO2, NO2 just add water and you have acid rain!
No one seems to notice the fact that all these ocd's, tourettes etc started after the 1950's when cars started tyo pollute the planet and where cars are non existent ie mountains, areas of Japan etc where the poeple live disease free and to over 100 - At least think about it - thats why i live in the Slovakian mountains 6 months of the year - i drink from fresh water streams, eat fresh grown food from my garden - i actually know what a real tomato tastes like now not a hyroponic red round ball of water and i am 100 times healthier when i come back to Scotland - FOR REAL!
Snap. I had a Jotel wood burning stove in my last property and it was lovely. Especially around Christmas and the colder days.
I lived in the countryside and not in the City. London has too much pollution already so I would not have looked to put a wood burning stove in my new build house.
You can't beat the all encompassing warmth of either a log burner or open fire when it is cold outside. I think this is a bad move by Defra.
tumblespots I do not think it will help keen property buyers when they look at eco measures within any new houses. One thing I was super keen on, when I bought my new property, was the fact the Energy Survey classed it as a 'B'. That meant that it was super insulated, had all the latest tech and that the bills were marginal. We really noticed a difference in terms of gas and electric usage and how the bills had dropped.
Ceebers Yes, we found that we didn't even visit houses with low ratings as it would have cost too much to rectify everything to make sure the house became more energy efficient.
tumblespots Since building a house and our plans being scrutinised by the Planners, I have paid more attention to this side of house hunting. Our house is incredibly warm and cheap to heat. Xx
Ceebers Nice to hear that you are cosy. We did an enormous amount of work on this property, some of it during the three months before we actually moved in - electrics, plumbing etc whilst they could have complete access. We didn't do the roof until afterwards but the roofers also laid the loft insulation because they could get there easily when the old roof was off. Preparation and forethought is the key.
Choking lorries on the motorways I would think cause more pollution but the government always seem to target the smaller issues that cause problems for those facing the pointy end. I also agree with tumblespots that overpopulation is the main cause of the Earth's problems. In the 60s the world population was 4 billion, it has now doubled to nearly 8 billion. (16 billion in another 30 years?). All those people need food, housing, clothing, education, medical (in an ideal world) and yet it is becoming more and more impossible to meet these needs. Soon the housing will take up more room than the fields needed to produce food, especially with so many turning vegetarian. And they are penalising folk for a piddling wood burner!
Absolutely, target those who are least able to defend themselves and who could be extremely cold if that is the only form of heating in their houses. We can't even supply enough fresh produce to feed ourselves in the UK now, we are already heavily reliant on the rest of the world for food supplies, which is very worrying. Mind you the way the world is going we probably won't be here in 100 years time (or even less?!) who knows. It's the people who do the damage. A concrete world is an awful world. Stop having children!
I'm guessing people will have to gather their own wood locally or just burn their rubbish or maybe local drug dealers will sell you wood as well as cocaine etc.
I've seen people in the past who have used Aga's/Rayburns that seem to be the whole centre of their heating system for their house with radiators attached etc just burning coal and wood. Always lovely to come into the kitchen in such homes on a winters day. I've also seen people who have have workshops or offices at the end of their gardens who often have those little cast iron stoves/heaters to keep warm plus they make themselves hot drinks on the hotplate at the top. This sort of thing except smaller, maybe without the oven compartment just a heater really with a single hotplate on top. Looked ideal. I think such devices are extremely common in Bulgaria. Still the way the world is going we won't need to worry about heating our homes soon will be on the beach with 20 degree heat in December.

I am in the process of converting my old 60's chimney back into wood burning and guess what i found
An old steel box under the hearth with pipes connected under the floorboards to the rest of the flat bathroom and kitchen - thats how they used to heat the water in these old flats - quite an interesting piece of history.
tumblespots Yeah but not much use they are from the 60's newer ones must have been fitted when i bought this place it was all done up and refurbished they just didnt remove the old pipes!
Funny though - If i could go back in time and do it the way they did it in the 60;s heating the water cylinder boiler with wood from the fire to heat the house i would be virtually nil in electricity or gas for heating - hmm its a bit of a paradox - we now have more expensive electricity and gas and in the old days we just burned wood and got it for free and we are supposed to be modern and advanced now!
I am finding many things like that now where things from the 60's 70's are more economical and easier to use and fix - My old Ford Escort MK II car - no fuel injection, no computer ecu control or fancy wiring could fix it with a screwdriver and a set of spanners now i need my OBD meters , laptop and a multitude of tools just to get the engine tuned whereas before all it was a matter of was using a timing strobe lamp and turning the distributor cap lol
Then we have my microwave its over 45 years old and still going strong whereas modern ones last 5 years tops.
Television - i have repaired my Plasma telly twice now in 11 years - my old CRT telly lasted 20 years+
Build in obsolsecence is a fact i can tell you that as a computer and electronics expert-it is fact!
garygemmell It is true we should be moving forwards, and they tell you that this is the case, but the reality is far from that. As you say everything is made to self-destruct after 2 - 5 years (how does that tie in with reduce, reuse, recycle?) when years ago they were made to last. Don't get me started on computer controlled cars and motorbikes and of course computers themselves. We are a backward nation!
tumblespots I can tell you why because of one simple electronic product its used in everything and has not been changed in 100 years its called the Capacitor.
As an electronics repair guy it is the one thing that fails in most items be it TV, Computer, Microwave etc its still based on old tech and fails first in any electrical device - the achilles heel shall we say in about 70% of all things electronic - they just dont last because of what they are (mainly the electrolytic type).
Last time i was up at the local cowp i saw around 20 led and plasma tellies that could have been repaired for less than a quid - I asked the guy if i could take some away but he refused - its not like the old days anymore we used to get a lot of our stuff from the dump - hoovers, tables, chairs, car parts etc as we were a skint family but my dad was magic with his hands he made everything from christmas presents to repairing his car with stuff that other people threw out - he even hand carved a cowboy fort for my christmas present on year (And it was my favourite) - 6 foot by 6 foot it was with individually carved wooden logs for the walls and little houses inside with flower pots made from old colgate tops and a bit of lichen from the local woods and even made the little racks where they used to tie up horses - Its the kind of hand made thing you see in Harrods selling for Β£2000!
Sadly the days of hand made and craftsmanship are gone!

garygemmell We have been watching Forces TV lately so I know where you are coming from. It was a better time despite JS (upside-down in the gif). He certainly fixed it for many people.... He always look dodgy though - or is it only me that thinks that?

It was those white eyelashes that did it for me - creepy as hell!
But yeah always gave me,my mum , dad and bruvvers the creeps - he was a creepy guy but i always liked Rolf Harris - such a shame he turned out to be one of the nasties!
John Pertwee was my fave though - best Doctor Who ever and who can forget Wurzel and aunt sally - now if he was one of them that would be really devastating but i am a good judge of character and he always struck me as an absolute and utter 101% gentleman like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee - Peter Cushing was quite the most amazing gentleman that you could ever possibly hope to meet - he was without doubt a real credit to the film industry - so talented too and so nice in real life - so sorry when i heard about his wife it destroyed his life poor guy!
My dad met Tommy Cooper and said he was also an amazing gentleman - its a shame the days of being a gentleman with honour and common decency are gone replaced by our feral pea brained society we have now - I never see well dressed, polite and classy gentlemen like my dad anywhere anymore its really sad - all my dads pals mostly were like that always wore a suite and tie even when going up the golf club and never swore - i only heard my dad swear once in my life when he nearly had an accident and said "stupid cow" and that was his limit - now the "f" word seems to be accepted as normal.

I worked for the BBC in Queen Margaret drive for 6 months before they fired me and believe me it was of no surprise what goes on in there - i used to find all sorts of **** on the managers computers and the big fat bearded IT boss at the time (he looked like a real perv so was probably into it to) just told me to erase all the files and say nothing as he didnt want any comeback on the IT dept!
garygemmell Yes, gentlemen are all but lost. My dad (at 93) hasn't and won't swear - well now and again he says 'well I'm jiggered!'. As you say wears a suit and the modern can't compete in any, way shape or form. Comedians in the main were actually funny and didn't need to swear either - I will make exceptions for Jim Davidson and Bernard Manning. We've seen the best.
I want a wood burning stove. I was planning on picking up all the wood that falls through out the year (I'm going to be going very soon to somewhere more rural than I am now) and burning that wood that falls naturally.
A good plan, but make sure that you have 'collecting rights' as certain woods only give those rights to people living near enough to them. A friend of ours lives in a wood and has these rights.

garygemmell Not at all. I have a friend who does that too and they would be verrrryyyy reluctant to turn anything over to the 'crown' (ha!). Stupid laws.
Yes, our friend in the woods is one of only a handful of people who is allowed to legitimately use the fallen wood from the woods. - Another local law.
tumblespots I have common land on my new doorstep. This is the area where I used to play as a kid. I had 2 friends who had horses and used to graze them on the land. There's also meadows and at the bottom of my garden there is more land that isn't enough to build houses on and it is on a slope down hill that is full of trees that I can access from the garden too. I haven't been this surrounded by countryside since the early 90s.

If I ever find anything of note, I'm not telling the authorities because it either ends up in the British musuem in london or disappears never to be seen again! in the 70s, loads of roman artifacts were found here and all vanished! No one knows where huge mosaic floors went etc. If I find something I'll look after it.
ShellyAnn That sounds idyllic, we have fields behind us and at the moment we are waiting for the cattle to return as they do in the spring with their offspring.

This is certainly true in this case and we will be facing a bleak future if they have their way.
Our next door neighbour has one in their garage/big shed/man cave and it bloody stinks! Its on now and stinks our house out. Have to close my windows when its on but still gets into the house.
