Working from Home - without Broadband

I did check my Three phone and I had 4g and the guy said Vodaphone was also good.

So how would I get the SIM to work for two laptops to be connected to a sim. Do I need one of those portable things? I'm crap with technology. I don't even know how much data we would use but I imagine a Skype video call of at least an hour a day uses a lot!

Yes we have given notice to cancel our landline/broadband at home.

rararachel do you have a old or not used smart phone to hand. If you do just pop the sim into there. i Can put instructions up later as i not have access to phone at moment it’s pretty easy. davidstockport is good giving technology advice maybe he will see this .

rararachel you use the 'hotspot' function on your phone. Then search for wifi network on your laptop, find your phone and use the password which you can find on your hotspot.

We use it on 2 laptops and it's spotty at times (conference calls on both laptops) but usually works well

Ann1984 rararachel I was surprised to find you can get a router that works over the mobile system (no phone socket required) that with unlimited data costs £22 a month (that's less than most of us pay for normal broadband).

davidstockport I never knew this. This is ideal for the 4 months we are away from home and I'd be tempted to do away with a phone socket permanently at home BUT at home we don't have a good phone signal (it's non existent with EE and Vodaphone) but with Three we have a half decent signal now but this is only because we have a booster connected to the router. Could you connect the booster to the router on your link?

rararachel I think you would need to check with the postcodes for both your home address and the address of the caravan, if it's only suitable for the caravan it might be better to take one of the deals that aren't tied to a lengthy contract. I'm not sure if when you say you have a booster connected to your router you mean to boost the signal (from router) in your home - if so (and it's possible) you might find it better to connect devices directly to your router with ethernet cables.

davidstockport yes currently we have a Three booster box connected to our router (which is a landline router) as our signal is poor. Yes you're probably right a shorter contract may be better just for the caravan and then when our house renovation is sorted we can just get normal broadband again as a router over a mobile signal won't work at our home address (was hoping to do away with broadband all together) due to poor mobile signal!

I'll look at the best rolling 30 day contract.

I use my mobile as a hotspot for my laptop 5 days a week (working days) and I think I never spent more than 20GB, and I use my laptop 90% of the time at work.

kikogpe it's the amount of Skype calls they worry me re data use not just normal laptop work.

rararachel I do not use Skype in my daily work, but I can say that I watch a lot of videos, music 100% of the time, Outlook, Gmail, etc.

I have seen a few data plans with unlimited data for about £20 per month, but it will be best to check connection speeds first as that is probably the priority (I've known a few people who thought they got a great deal on their mobile contracts to find it was ropey as hell when they tried to use it at home)
