Working in Retail
Ask a Question
Have you worked in retail before or work there now? Would you say that it is a decent job or a horrible one? I have read mixed reviews so I'm not sure about it. What's the pay like? Which shop would you recommend working at full or part time?
Retail has quite a wide range to consider. I have worked in retail for most of my working career in various places and positions and the odd bit of telesales (that was soul destroying). Some of the jobs sucked and hated it, my current employer overall is good and I enjoy it. Pay wise typically I imagine they all start on minimum living wage and some sales positions give you commission on top. As for part time or full time well that depends on what you can get, what your able to do and how much money you want
Iv worked in retail for about 5 years i now work online shopper and picker which i love as we start at 4am and finosh before people are even awake im always busy and i love it! My old job and place wasnt as gppd i guess it depends on your company
I have worked in retail and it was ok except for the Christmas period I hated it then loads of people asking the same thing over and over and the closer to Xmas the ruder people seemed to get .
I think everyone should try working in retail at some point in their life to understand customer service and realise how horrible it is to be shouted at my customers when itβs something completely out of your control... iβve worked in Boots, H Samuel and Sports Direct - avoid Sports Direct like the plague! H Samuel are a good employer, as are Boots. Staff discount is great at both, pay is good as its above minimum wage which is the usual pay for retail.
I wouldn't recommend it. I did it several years ago. Majority of the customers were rude. Might just be that most people are where I live though.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I have seen a couple of bad situations in stores with customers. I don't think I want to work in retail.
I did retail and it's okay, just think of the sector you are getting yourself to. Read reviews of the place beforehand as well.
Thank you for letting me know. I'm sure every place is different. I have read reviews and most retails have really bad reviews
Letgetfreestuff I understand that, it's hardly the staff fault a place having bad reviews in my experience. Management usually doesn't know how to run the business.
Highly-priced shops are usually good for a quiet time working. Stores like Primark and the like is usually a no-no. Especially if you are working warehouse.
I'm hoping some people that have been rude to retail staff, find themselves looking for a job in retail out of desperation
Working in retail is a mixed bag. Sometimes you get good pay, nice colleagues to work with and good hours. And sometimes you get to do all the crappy work that nobody else wants to do and have to work extra unpaid hours. It depends where you work. I have heard good things from a couple of friends about John Lewis
Hard job...some companies does not employ u full time....u get an 8 hours contract and do overtime...where I work none of the sales associates are full time.
I think most of the people think the job is just to be on tills and tidy the things on the shelves....but we have to change the shelves and merchandise and flow new stock and help the customers, help LP...etc it is more complex...It is a full time walking and standing job...
The pay depends where do u live...In London it is higher and also depends on the company.
I would recommend luxury retail...that is more comfortable. The rest are hardworking fast work environment...but some of us like that.
My first job was as a hifi salesman, many years ago. I used to love all the gadgets and was generally enthusiastic about the products. Some real high end stuff too. It was a nice job and the customers were generally great there. A few years later I was back at retail as a shop manager for a small shop selling mainly electronics and a mixture of stuff. Customers for that shop weren't quite as nice typically and I believe although could be wrong one of my customers was Fred West. I seemed to remember him as a past customer at the time he was in the news. I say customer but he didn't buy anything but came into the shop and was a bit strange. He lived about 100 miles away but where I am I guess is a common route for people coming down to the seaside in the south west. Also Edward Mulhare who used to be in Knight Rider came into the shop.
