World's 26 Richest People Own as Much as Poorest 50%, Says Oxfam

News

The growing concentration of the world’s wealth has been highlighted by a report showing that the 26 richest billionaires own as many assets as the 3.8 billion people who make up the poorest half of the planet’s population.

In an annual wealth check released to mark the start of the World Economic Forum in Davos, the development charity Oxfam said 2018 had been a year in which the rich had grown richer and the poor poorer.

It said the widening gap was hindering the fight against poverty, adding that a 1% wealth tax would raise an estimated $418bn (£325bn) a year – enough to educate every child not in school and provide healthcare that would prevent 3 million deaths.

It seems to me that it is the poorer people in developed countries (i.e. those who live a relatively comfortable life but sometimes struggle) who give the most. They pay more tax pro rata and are more willing to give to charity. When I read of large companies with unimaginable wealth trying to avoid tax it makes my blood boil, when is enough money, enough money?

Throughout my 65 years of life I have watched appeals and often donated to various charities but it seems nothing ever changes/improves. People still starve, go without water, education and medicine. For this to be so in the 21st Century is scandalous beyond words. I understand all the arguments of 'they earned it, it is theirs to spend as they like' and so on. But wouldn't it be wonderful if all the wealthy people of the world gave more to the poor. They can't take it with them and most won't be able to spend it in a lifetime.
