Worlds Oldest Person Celebrates 117th Birthday

In the News

What an amazing achievement to reach this age and be the oldest person alive in the world took the record when a Brazilian nun died at the age of 116 last year

Ethel Caterham lives in surrey and said she achieved two of her wishes this year , stroking a llama and holding hands with the King , in that order,  lol

To think she was born 5 years before WW1 and even more amazing survived having covid at 110

She was born on August 21, 1909, in Shipton Bellinger, Hampshire, Caterham and at 18 worked as an au pair in India for a military family

She met her future husband , a British Army lieutenant colonel and lived in the UK for a while

They then moved to Gibraltar then Hong Kong

I think the good genes run in her family because her sister lived until she was 104 !

Amazingly she isn't the oldest person to have ever lived , that was French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years and 164 days and is holding the title in the Guiness Book of Records

I would love to see it replaced with Ethels' record

Imnotcheap I think being born before WW1 and the sinking of the Titanic to quote two examples are massive I , and to survive covid at 110 shows how strong her body is

The fact her sister lived to 104 also proves the longevity is in the family genes

I'd like to stroke a llama but zero interest in holding hands with the king and I doubt he would like to hold my hands either. Amazing age and hope she has many happy years in front of her. If that is her current photo she doesn't look too bad at all for her age. She could be mistaken for someone under 100 years I would of thought.

BonzoBanana I totally agree on both points B, especially the hand holding , lol

I would love to know what her diet has been and which foods she has been eating

We consume so much poison nowadays , micro plastics and additives, and breathe in so many pollutants to reach her age is a fantastic achievement , especially living in the UK and not some unpolluted island where the air is fresh and there is no stress , which is a big factor in life

telmel It's pretty grim in the UK, sewage and water systems are under huge demand with a population far above what they were designed for. I noticed in the USA their water charges were absolutely huge and mine is very reasonable so I wouldn't of thought much money to invest yet I don't want prices to increase however the quality of water seems to be downgrading somewhat but we aren't at Indian levels yet.

The most important factor to long life seems to be genetics though so its a lottery how long you live to a degree and that is out of your control. I've watched so many videos that say fasting is so important to human health. The body naturally expects there to be times without foods sometimes many days and it uses that time to repair and purify the body, autophagy etc where the body starts consuming itself starting with damaged cells etc which could be cancerous it also uses fats that have been stored in the body sometimes badly like around the heart. 24/7 eating is probably a huge negative factor.

BonzoBanana I know someone who fasts for three days because he does a certain martial art , nothing to do with religion, he has lost a lot of weight but is full of energy

Maybe that's the way to go , it's three days where you are not putting food additives or pesticides into your body

Happy birthday to her and all that, but I'd rather her than me live to that age. I'd like to pet a llama, but holding hands with the King, no thank you.

An incredible age to live to and I bet she can tell some amazing stories about her life. She has certainly lived through some awful times especially the wars. I wonder what era she found the best.
