Worn down Shoes - Repair or Throw Out?
Ask a Question
I find that my soles wear down easily, but I can’t bear to chuck them - if I can get them mended, I would, although these days I try DIY jobs rather than use the menders
Do you try to fix shoes, or do you just get rid and buy new shoes?
Depends how badly damaged they are, how attached to them I am, and how much to replace in comparison to fixing.
Find a local cobbler and ask how much it'll cost. Shouldn't be too much for just the soles and they'll do a decent job. Worth it if you like the shoes!
The soles are usually what gets worn away, but I have to admit my shoes do get a lot of use, so sometimes they’re also a bit tatty from wear and tear, so I get embarrassed to take battered shoes to the cobblers. I have mostly been following fix it videos online to try and revive old shoes, and just buying stuff from amazon to patch some of them up
hspexy I've seen all kinds in my local, and I've wondered why people are still wearing them! But if they mean something to you, or can be fixed up, I don't see a problem. I don't think I have the patience or skill to try fixing them myself. I can polish them and that's the extent!
hspexy my soles have done the same and just bought some stick on soles from amazon, just gotta wait for the adhesive to dry then can test them out, saves buying trainers as these are still in good condition
A few years ago I repaired a much-loved pair of shoes for my husband - he had tried to replace them but they had long become obsolete. I used a product called shoe goo. I was able to completely fill in a thin area on the tread and build up a wonky heel area. When dried and cured you couldn't see the repair. Have a look on ebay.
Just a word of caution if buying off Ebay you might find that when you think you're ordering it you're only buying the plastic nozzle for the tube. So take care.
Thanks. I ordered some of that off amazon which arrived today. Haven’t used it yet, but definitely have some shoe repairing to do
I normally buy cheap sneakers and shoes and wear till they're unusable. Usually, they last for a year or so and that's fine by me as they did their job.
I see why a lot like to collect Nike and Adidas (I guess) sneakers but at the end of the day they're something to wear, imo.
I remember back in the day by mum taking all her shoes and my dads to the cobblers and getting them fixed.. but their shoes always cost a lot more.. my work shoes I go through quite quickly, they cost me £8 and last me around 6 months.. I think it would cost me more than £8 to fix them!
Yes that’s true. Shoes are quite cheap nowadays, very mass produced and easily available, so doesn’t make sense to taking them in for a repair, unless they’ve got sentimental value
hspexy or are particularly expensive or designer shoes... I reckon it balances out in the long run, replacing cheap shoes or repairing expensive shoes
It depends on how much the shoes cost initially and how comfy they are. As i have wide feet and a high instep I i struggle to find comfortable shoes that I like the look of or are flattering. so I would happily pay to have them fixed. If they were cheap and cheerful I wouldn't.
Depends on how damaged they are if they could be repaired then why not instead of throwing then away
I would normally replace them. Although, I don't tend to throw them out. I just add them to the old shoe pile
But what do you do with the old shoe pile? Do you ever go back to using them? If not, why have the pile taking up space?
MeestairChrees I will occasionally dip into the pile if I've been cajoled into doing something that is likely to damage a new pair of shoes. I'm also a bit of a clothing/shoe hoarder
ACR yeah I use old ones for muddy days when I can. I find it hard to throw away clothes too, but don't have a pile of (old) shoes - too many shoes in general though, but they're all fine!
Lol that’s what I currently have - a big pile of tatty, worn out shoes hidden under an unused industrial sewing machine. The idea was to repair most of the things...I have occasionally thrown some of the very worn out shoes and boots, but I do salvage the laces, buckles, etc. can’t help that I have hoarding skills
I throw but they're usually just shoezone cheapies. If they look like they have some wear left in them they'll go in a charity bag/bin
Depends on the damage, how much paid etc.
Although I always try to repair first due to money issues
A well made pair of shoes are worth mending not like some of cheap almost disposable ones.
