Worst Colour for Walls?
Ask a Question
whats the worst colour combo you seen as decor?
personally I think a certain colour of brown looks horrendous on walls and floor, exceptionally in the toilets think it be poop!
GSM do they tell you it's terracotta.. My older sister done that to my mum. She offered to go buy the paint for mum's kitchen when we were teens. My mum had already pointed out the colour she liked. My sister came back with orange. My sister said no it's Terracotta. (It was orange). My mum went mad. Had to use it as my sister had 'lost' the receipt. She couldn't afford not to. It was horrendous. Lesson learned get your own paint.
I think that comes down to personal taste. Someone I know painted her walls this dull grey colour, which is not to my taste at all as I think it looks dingy, but she's really pleased with it so each to their own.
angelik yeah couldn't do all grey.i like colour. I like to play around with colours to see what I feel works for me x
I think yellow doesn't look very nice on walls. It depends on the shade. Some yellows can brighten the place up if it was a bright shade. But not for a house, it would be better for a cafe near the seaside. There are some dull yellows that can make a room look like the wall has gone from from a white to a tarnished yellow
Getsome don't move into a new build everything magnolia and white. You can't decorate for first year or so either. I was so glad when I could start to decorate. Magnolia, white +kids = disaster
tracisinclair01 I made the mistake of doing my full house white and grey does not mix well with a 3 year old x
HayleyMcGill totally feel your pain. My youngest is three. He thinks he quite the artist on my walls
tracisinclair01 yip and the nice dirty hand prints all up the hall wall always out with my wee magic sponge
I'm with you on that. Magnolia is a bit boring and old fashioned. Our entire house was magnolia and chip paper...took years to get rid, one room at a time
It really depends on what size the room is and how many walls you're painting but I definitely agree, not brown.
think depending on shade of brown it looks ok as a accent color, just not as a the main colour!
shadowcat my mother in law had beautiful chocolate brown wallpaper as a feature wall. It worked well in the wallpaper. they way she had it it felt cosy. So yeah it depends on how it's used.x
It's all down to personal taste and whether you are colour blind. We have two small alcoves in the Living Room painted red, a friend thought they were muddy brown!
Our house had the entrance and stairs/landing painted in a sunshine yellow when we moved in. Although we had far more important jobs to tackle, we repainted white until we could choose what we wanted. I've always thought that yellow would be an uplifting, cheerful colour in a house but this made us both feel nauseous.
Our homes previous owners loved green. When I say everything was green, I mean EVERYTHING! Bath, sink, shower, tiles, walls, carpets, kitchen cupboards. Even the cutlery left behind had green handles. We still can't bear to have anything green even all these years later.
Glitterandgold This made me smile. My school uniform was bottle green - can't stand it ever since.
Glitterandgold Oh gosh it sounds like a nightmare having everything green. It must have been awful there
sunny101 That's what I was thinking. My friend's house had yellow walls and when the suns rays hit the walls the room was blinding
Glitterandgold hahaha, didn’t see your post and that’s exactly what I said! Bottle green school uniform...
Glitterandgold my mum had similar, but everything was brown. Fire sale on brown paint. The only room that was different was kitchen that was yellow. That horrendous also. Still trying to help her decorate out the brown. X
When I moved in to my old house every room was painted a really dark shade of navy blue - including the ceilings! It was horrible, and we had to go over it with several coats to get rid of it.
with black wouldn't know where theres damp! think i read a study staying in a all red room can drive people crazy if they stay too long
shadowcat my little sister wanted her bedroom painted red when she was about 15 my mum and I had to paint it. She didn't want one wall she wanted all red. It gave us a headache after painting one wall. Another three to go. My now hubby and I then had to go in to that room when we became homeless. I was pregnant at time. So we tried to cover with with. Five costs of white later on one wall. It was still coming through. Covered the rest with fabrics It was horrendous iv never used red in my decorating since. X
I think grey. The main reason for this is that dead things are grey. Grey is the colour of death. So I'd prefer literally any paint colour except for that one. Not a huge fan of silver either but it's such an improvement on grey.
kfe202 grey is in. I depends what you put with grey. Grey on its own no way. It's good as a base to build on though
tracisinclair01 Thanks for coming back to me on this. You're so right that grey is in just now. It's everywhere. Maybe you're right and the colours you put with it make all the difference.
Dark green/bottle green... reminds me of school
Uniform! BUT, with any colour, if you accessorise with the right colours .... ANY colour can look nice?
MandeeMayson yeah I had emerald green as a feature wall. In my kitchen dining. It goes lovely with copper accessories.x
It depends. I don’t like white, but I know it’s a popular colour used for walls, although I think it’s dull
hspexy I so agree. White is a no no especially with kids. I have a friend who has 7 kids another on way. Started painting hall white. Kids have already drew on it and marked it. Her hubby refuses to finish painting it.
tracisinclair01 You're so right that white can be a risky choice with kids! How brave of your friend to have 8 kids! Maybe that wallpaper that can be washed down might be a better choice than paint for their family?
kfe202 yeah I struggle with four. She wanted to put like a clear varnish or something over it. I'll suggest the wallpaper to her thanks.x
tracisinclair01 Lol that’s what my brother used to do when we were kids. A white wall is like a blank canvas, waiting to be destroyed
hspexy definitely a boy thing. My three girls never have. My brother used to do the same.
tracisinclair01 Wow, four children. You're so brave raising four. What an achievement! It's possible to get wallpaper that's designed to be drawn on with whiteboard markers then wiped off. Probably quite expensive but I wonder if that might be a good fit for the children.
kfe202 thanks will check it out. Don't really want to encourage him drawing on walls, but if it makes easier to clean of, if he does then will do some research on it. Xx
tracisinclair01 you’re right. I never understood it, as I had a colouring pad and sketch book to do my doodles. He insisted on drawing trains on the walls
My house is magnolia and white, I went neutral for selling as everyone's tastes are different and if its neutral it will be easier to redecorate.
I wouldn't have black, too dark. I think it depends on the room, how many walls you are painting, the finish of the paint.
I plan to decorate my new house, when I find it, but no idea what colours yet, although based on this thread, yellow is probably out!
MrsCraig pastel shades are good. Easier to paint over if you don't like. Don't go dark then regret it x
tracisinclair01 I like pastel colours. I really like duck egg blue, would like to have a feature wall in the kitchen in duck egg blue, with a duck egg blue roller blind. Maybe one day x
MrsCraig I have duck egg blue with lilac in my two older girls room looks lovely and fresh. One wanted it to be blue one wanted girly colours like pinks. So came up with lilac and duck egg blue. Both are happy with it
tracisinclair01 that sounds nice. I love lilac too, never thought to put them together though.
MrsCraig I'm sure you'll have loads of ideas from here when you get your new house . Start making an inspiration board. The whole family can help with ideas that they would like to see in a new home. By the time you get a new home. You'll be rating to go with the paint.
You're so right not to pick out paint colours until you're actually living in the new house. Some of the best advice I ever received was to live in a new house for at least a year before starting to redecorate. I guess you don't really know what needs doing and what colours would be good in that particular house until you're living there. You're so right to avoid black, though. Too dark!
kfe202 I know the types of colours I could like, but until I know what the house is like, the room layouts etc there is no point deciding this room will be this and this room will be this! I would still love to have duck egg blue in the kitchen if possible, but we will see.
My current house was magnolia when I moved in and I never bothered to decorate as I thought it looked nice. Now that I have a toddler I can see why people wouldn't like magnolia or beige white as it does show up all the marks etc but it is a good neutral colour for selling.
