MAKE YOUR AUTUMN AWESOME: LUXURIATE ON THE WATERSIDE WITH A TWO-NIGHT MIDWEEK STAY FOR TWO AT THE ENCHANTING THE DUKE OF PORTLAND BOATHOUSE ON ULLSWATER, WORTH £650
Summer holidays are upon us, but the canniest holidaymakers are thinking about autumn. One of the most captivating getaway destinations is the breathtaking Lake District, and one of the best places to stay is The Duke of Portland Boathouse on the banks of Ullswater.
Voted ‘the best waterside retreat’ by BBC Countryfile Magazine, the building originally belonged to the 3rd Duke of Portland, who was twice Britain’s Prime Minister. Eventually, the Duke had to sell up to pay legal bills in a dispute with the Earl of Lowther – though his loss is the public’s gain. This cosy, romantic bolthole has an open plan layout with magnificent beams and underfloor heating beneath a rustic oak floor.
There are sumptuous leather sofas to recline on in front of a wood- burning stove, and unparalleled views of the lake through the patio doors leading out to the balcony jutting out over the water. You can
laze in the slipper bath and doze under Egyptian cotton sheets. It’s the perfect place to stay to explore the Lakes – if you can drag yourself from its unadulterated luxury, of course.
