On the surface, opera and ballet feel worlds apart, but the latest production from Opera North will prove that they’re not so different. They’ve teamed up with Phoenix Dance Theatre to present a double bill of cutting-edge theatre, in the form of Stravinsky’s controversial ballet, The Rite of Spring, and Puccini’s mini-masterpiece, Gianni Schicchi. Music is at the heart of each performance, but it’s interpreted in completely different ways – and that’s what makes this double bill so special.

If you’re our lucky winner, you’ll get a rare opportunity to see a revolutionary ballet and a wickedly funny opera, all in one night, because we’re giving away two tickets to the opening night on Saturday 16th February 2019 and they’re some of the best seats in the house. They’re both short, easy to watch shows, so you’ll get a double shot of culture in just two hours.
Written over 100 years ago, The Rite of Spring has gone down in history. Why? Because it almost caused a riot on its first outing. It might have been the shocking dissonance of the music or perhaps it was the unconventional choreography – whatever the reason, the Parisian aristocracy were shaken to their core. Now internationally-acclaimed Haitian-born choreographer Jeanguy Saintus will breathe new life into the ballet, as the Orchestra of Opera North plays Stravinsky’s distinctive score.
But that’s just one half of the evening’s entertainment. You’ll also be treated to a satirical triumph, as Christopher Alden puts his unique stamp on Gianni Schicchi. Inspired by a passage in Dante’s Inferno, this is Puccini’s only outright comedy and it’s laugh-out-loud funny. Buoso Donati is dead, but he’s left his fortune to a monastery. His scheming relatives have no choice, but to enlist the help of infamous conman Gianni Schicchi to get back what is no longer rightfully theirs. But can he be trusted? You’ll find out on the night.

Dough in the City is the new all-day eatery from the people behind Vice and Virtue. Like its older sibling, it’s rooted in the world of fine dining, but here it’s made more accessible with a laid-back atmosphere and a menu that will take you from morning to night. In the evening, they serve a petite menu of inspired dishes, like tandoori cod with Bombay potato, marbled egg and red onion. And if you win our competition, you can try it for yourself with a three-course dinner and a bottle of house wine to enjoy before the show.
