What is it?
The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, has announced as part of his mini-budget that you will be able to eat at restaurants for half price. The other half will be paid for by the Government, up to a maximum of £10 off per person. It includes food and non-alcoholic drinks.
When is it?
3rd August until 31st August.
Where can you get it?
Restaurants and pubs are all eligible, however, they have to apply to the Government. So we don't yet know which restaurants will be doing it but I am sure many will. It is open to both High Street chains and independent restaurants and pubs.
More Information:
The campaign is called "Eat Out To Help Out". As an example, if you are a family of four, you can get £40 off an £80 restaurant bill including non-alcoholic drinks. You can only use it when eating in and it won't apply if you take your meal away.
The restaurant will give you the discounted price and then they will claim the money back from the government.
Make sure you check with the restaurant or pub before you go if they are accepting the scheme otherwise you may have to pay full price. It is not a legal requirement that they have to do this.
High street chains and independent restaurants and pubs are all eligible for it and when more details and where it will be available are announced, we will update this post so bookmark and check back later.
It is a Government effort to support the hospitality industry which has been particularly hard hit during the pandemic and, it is claimed, will help secure the jobs of 1.8 million people who work in that industry.
The Government has purposefully chosen the "quieter" days of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to keep business constant to help them get more staff back.
Businesses will need to register on a website from next Monday 13th July if they want to take advantage of the scheme. When they claim, they will get the money back within 5 working days.
Rishi Sunak also announced the Government will be cutting the VAT rate from 20% to 5% for the hospitality and tourism industry until 12th January 2021. Hopefully that means cheaper prices passed on to us, and it's an effort to get people visiting attractions such as theme parks.
I personally think this is a great initiative - will you be taking advantage of this offer? Let us know in the comments.
Ooh sounds good... think I'll have a pint of Corona (virus) with my meal. Is he going to give 50% off for funerals afterwards when they get covid19?
carmelleeds hi Carmel this is jonormsbys next of kin here, you were right he died going out for dinner when you told him to get lost. Nice 1.
So now the government is doing his meerkat app or tastcard ;-) this will benefit high street chain mainly as pub don’t really have the space to do social distance dining, and not allowed on alcohol. So it will be a great stuff used by city worker in their local mcdo or chain. Yes they also need support but local pubs have lots more impact and tide in the local community than cafe rouge or pizza express to my view.
No it is for any restaurant and pub that want to apply. Chains and independents - as more info becomes available, we will update this post. I am hoping places like Toby Carvery and Pizza Hut will as well as my local pub so we can take the kids for a summer treat. Also, there is nothing stopping you going for lunch in one place and dinner in another or maybe breakfast as its taken off your bill and claimed back rather than a one use voucher.
emmabeckz Yes business will effects but they will get govement business loss funds due covid my uncle confirmed with his accountant claim big sum even he don't earn that much in a year x
Good idea includes buffet but cutting 20 to 5 % still put prices up all the restaurants and pubs with this percentage cut just con . Wait and see
suenurse..... same here, we don't eat out usually, and makes me think about people who can't get out (disabled, elderly etc) they won't be benefiting from this. Also, whats the chances of these places creeping prices up before August to pocket a bit more money.
dlrc400 yeah won’t be any good to me as I’m disabled and can’t get out much!!! Mind you if it’s not a onetime use I can see a lot of people taking advantage of getting out for food after being lockdown for so long. Anything’s a treat nowadays
I can not wait for this to happen, I love eating out, its my fav thing to do. As long as its all done safetly, I am very excited.
We as a family missed out on so many celebrations since the lockdown. Its my Birthday in August, so it will be brilliant to celebrate with everybody again, and 50% off will make it even sweeter.
I’d take advantage of this if they did allow takeaways, I’m disabled and don‘t get out much!!! Would be nice to have a treat, my sons now out of work, so now a household on benefits so not much spare cash!!
Thank you for posting , I’d never had known this otherwise, don’t watch the news or read the papers much!!
Yes definitely will be making use of this offer if feel safe to do so at our local restaurants etc .
The statement from Rishi today was poor and lacking in many areas. For those who want to take advantage of this scheme fill your boots. This is of no interest to me and I think I would rather stay safe at home.
summerdaze3 I ate out on Saturday in a place I’ve been to a few times before and unfortunately they had put their prices up...I’ve got the meerkat offer so I won’t be using the government thing
Well I love this idea! to not think what to cook for 1 night for 4 people is Amazing. Oh and no washing up I’m there
Just send people a debit card loaded with ready to use funds and defined places of where to use it and no need to call restaurants and it'd also avoid restaurants to claim back from the government
I’m still not comfortable eating in a restaurant. Why can’t we get the same for take out from restaurants?! Guuuurrrr
I'm hoping my fave restaurant takes part. I need to get out. It's not good for my mental health to be stuck inside.
Really good initiative. I will definitely support local pubs and also book a weekend out in a countryside.
That's a great idea! Will be good to go out with my family after not being able to see them or go anywhere with the covid-19 situation. Let's see which restaurants will be included. Thanks for sharing again Tom
Great initiative, me and the family will definitely venture out for a meal. Thanks for sharing
Glad it’s not just the chain stores but independent stores as well. Not that I will be going anywhere soon
Good deal. Heard it on the news earlier. As a low income family of 6, we never go out to eat (unless my mum is visiting), but maybe with the discount, we can all go out next month.
Please give discounts for public transport use so it will encourage people to get out as many of us are still scared to use it so we need a motivation!! Thanks
