Amazon Echo Auto - Add Alexa to Your Car
Amazon’s Echo technology comes to UK cars for the first time with the Amazon Echo Auto. Ask Alexa to play your favourite music, answer questions, stream podcasts and radio stations, provide directions, find nearby businesses and make calls with the power of your voice alone.
Slim and lightweight, the Echo Auto connects to Alexa through your smartphone’s Alexa app and plays through your car’s speakers via auxiliary input or your phone’s Bluetooth connection. The eight in-built microphones will capture your voice even over the noise of a busy road, music or air conditioning, while the hands-free operation allows you to focus on driving.
The Echo Auto is simple to set up and starts within a few seconds:
- Plug the Echo Auto into your car’s USB port or cigarette lighter and mount it to an air vent
- Open the Alexa app on your smartphone to begin setup
- Set your car stereo to Bluetooth or auxiliary and adjust the volume (this needs to be done before each drive)
- Ask Alexa to play your favourite music, answer questions and more
The Echo Auto comes with a variety of options to protect your privacy, such as the ability to turn off the microphones and delete recordings. An air vent mount is also included in the box, which allows your Echo Auto to be easily secured inside your car.
Why get Alexa in my car?
Having Alexa in your car gives you the ultimate hands-free experience and offers a wide variety of benefits. Using just your voice, you can:
- play music, media and entertainment (“Alexa, play 20 questions”)
- get news, podcasts, weather forecasts and sports information
- carry out local searches, get directions and get traffic updates (“Alexa, get directions to the nearest grocery store”, “Alexa, what are some top-rated Italian restaurants nearby?” or “Alexa, how does my commute look?”)
- control your smart home (e.g. “Alexa, is my front door locked?” or “Alexa, turn my porch light on”)
- get answers to your questions (e.g. “Alexa, what’s the tallest mountain in the UK?”)
- connect with people at home and let them know where you are (e.g. “Alexa, announce I’m on my way home” or “Alexa, call the kitchen Echo Dot”)
- call friends and family
- stay organised by adding to your to-do list, setting reminders or re-ordering items
Compatibility
The Amazon Echo Auto is compatible with most cars that support Bluetooth to play music or that have an auxiliary input. You can check if your car is compatible here. If your car doesn’t support Bluetooth or have an auxiliary input, you may be able to use an FM transmitter to connect to the Echo Auto.
The Echo Auto is compatible with the majority of smartphones, and supports Android 6.0 and iOS 12 or greater. The system uses your existing smartphone plan and the Alexa app for the purposes of connectivity, and carrier charges may apply.
