Standing strong since 1902, the American Hotel Amsterdam is a shining monument to Art Nouveau. The triumphant stone arches that tower above the front door, weathered by the ages, and an impressive water fountain in front together create a dramatic welcome for guests.

Dining
Breakfast is to be had at the in-house Café Americain and features the likes of wholemeal bread, croissants, raisin bread, jam and marmalade, farmer's butter, farmer's cheese with nettle, raw beef ox sausage, boiled egg, coffee and tea, and fresh orange juice.
More restaurant than cafe, it pays homage to its Art Nouveau roots with an impressive decor of dark wood and leather furnishings dressed with embroidered fabrics. On Sundays, live jazz music entertains accompanies a mix of international and Dutch cuisine. Fun fact: Prolific Dutch writer Harry Mulisch spent most of his time there, and now a table at the window bears his name.
Be sure to give their ice fondue a try: pieces of fresh fruit, chocolate and marshmallows surround a pot of liquid nitrogen and wait to be dipped and instantly frozen. It's quite an experience to watch smoke come out of your nose while you munch on a freshly frozen titbit.
Wellness
The hotel has an in-house sauna you can melt away any sightseeing aches in, and a gym for those keen to up the active ante. The fitness facilities are complimentary for hotel guests.
Location
Located right in the heart of Amsterdam's popular Leidseplein, there are plenty of things to see and do around the hotel. Visit the plethora of nearby museums, like the Van Gogh Museum, with over 200 paintings and 500 drawings by the artist, the Stedlijik Museum of Modern Art, and smaller museums spaced throughout the area. Or simply take the time to enjoy the restaurants and shopping spots around the hotel. It also helps that right on the hotel's doorstep there's a drop-off point for canal boats, ready to take you to wherever you want to explore in the city.
