What do you think of this Aldi deal?+20 points

Better than nothing - maybe ? Doesn't appear to contain the required 60% alcohol base to kill the current nasty .

Golfforall don't worry about it, it's probably out of stock already 😁 I'll check for it anyway

I checked my lidl one by Cien and it has plenty of alcohol in it like other branded hand sanitizers. I think the aldi/lidl products tend to be very similar. Image

Could you tell me where you checked the percentage on the aldi one so I can check for myself? Golfforall

cookiewithcarro Tried to check the specs on the Aldi site (no details) and googled "Lacara" to no avail .That Lidl Cien stuff is the real deal (going by the label), but I bet there are none in stock anywhere.

What is the point of using the hand sanitizer? It states it kills bacteria. Am I missing something because it definitely said on the news it's a virus going around and the hand sanitizer doesn't mention being able to kill viruses. 😏🤪

I see your point, I thought the same when they said on the news that people are asking for antibiotics to prevent corona virus... however, in this case, according to Wikipedia they also kill some viruses. It's hand "sanitiser" which doesn't specify only bacteria. Image

The "kills 99.9% of bacteria" just seems to be a marketing slogan (just like with toilet cleaners) and is targeted for every day users in a non-national health emergency, when the biggest threat are "bacteria" that may get you feeling sick if there is enough of them transferred into your system.

All in all hand sanitisers are better than nothing but hand washing with soap and hot water is probably better. I think hand sanitizers were first developed for the medical field, if I were to wash my hands after going into every room, I would waste half a day running to the bathroom.

cookiewithcarro I thought when hand sanitizers first came out for hospitals and medical centres they were higher in alcohol content. Because I new they had to alter them because alcoholics and general public were nicking them to drink and getting ******. So surely they aren't has good has before.

Yes, there was something like that but I'm not sure if it was with specifically hand sanitisers or general sanitising/alcohol products for disinfection. There are common products available to buy for anyone that were "denatured" with added substances that make it inedible (taste bad, as if alcohol wasn't gross enough) and have colour added (most commonly purple) to signify that it is a household product, not food and that allows it to be sold at lower prices and no extra tax like on spirits. These are around 92%, however I don't think they are used for disinfecting. I remember using it as a child to remove stickers from various surfaces. Products like AHD (general skin disinfectant) are commonly used today in medical settings (I recently noticed they make a "coloured" range with fragrances), the one we use is 96% ethanol, the same with medical white spirit (not sure if so easily available in the UK too, I get it at the pharmacy) or salicylic acid have been commonly used for years (now we are moving towards different, less harsh to the skin, disinfectants like octenidine and phenoxyethanol sprays). The skin disinfectants for staff have 72g of ethyl alcohol per 100g of the product and you are required to use it 6 times for the total time of 3 minutes of rubbing your hands for surgical staff. On top of that, people in the past filtered the danaturated alsohol through bread before drinking.. AndrewMason1969

So I googled it a bit and this post is recent and confirms it has the supposedly sufficient amount of ethanol. https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lacura-hand-gel-50ml-aldi-chelmsford-3420637

Dunno why I bother, I don't even like using hand sanitizers 😂

Yes ordered my Rubbing alcohol (Isopropyl) and Aloe Vera Gel to do just that .

33% Aloe Vera Gel , 66% Rubbing Alcohol , a few drops of essential oils to taste ( Lavender ,Tea tree for instance ) then mix well. I suggest put in those travel bottles you use to put stuff in to get through security at airports or in an old liquid soap container .

I'm by no means obsessive but doesn't hurt to be extra cautious . Less than £20 of ingredients will make about 1.5 litres hand sanitiser gel .

It's important to have the containers air tight too and deal with the open alcohol bottles quickly as it evaporates. Golfforall

Literally just opened WhatsApp and someone is sending chain message with pics of DIY hand sanitiser in a bowl by the door... Bruh. It won't work, just wash your hands.

cookiewithcarro Yes , just using those little travel bottles to put it in (and some used vape liquid bottles ) . Stops it from evaporating . Should have enough for a year or so for £20 as long as I don't have to resort to drinking it !

You don't have to mix it all at once , I just do a couple of mini bottles at a time 2/3 & 1/3 with a drop of smelly then shake well -doesn't have to be exact .
