It's a solid mountain bike and comes with a 2x8 drivetrain not 3x7. Really for a real mountain bike you want a 1x drivetrain with simple up/down gearing and better chain retention and you can't have narrow/wide profile teeth with a front derailleur. There is also the issue that the brake levers and shifters are combined so if you upgrade to hydraulic disc brakes later you also have to upgrade the shifters at the same time.
Personally I would say the upgrades you need to take this to the next level are;
Hydraulic disc brakes
Wide range 11-48T 8 speed cassette
gear hanger extender
8 speed shifter
single speed crankset something like 34-38T
Ultimately if you want to go off road I would recommend spending slightly more to get a slightly better spec but this is a good light off-road mountain bike that is still usable on the road. This is quite a retro spec as the first mountain bikes with mechanical disc brakes were configured like this with a 2x crankset but nowadays 1x is seen as far superior for exclusive off-road use and still good for light road use.
