Experience the rugged beauty of the salt marshes in Cley-next-the-Sea, at this cosy country pub with rooms - cooked breakfast included
Accommodation
Cley-next-the-Sea, an old port town for wool and grain, is home to The George, which overflows with charm and boasts a prime position overlooking the stunning marsh. The town is made up of picturesque and narrow winding lanes, carving their way through acres of salt marsh, peppered with the brightest colours and a stretch of beautiful, unspoilt beach. Imagine pretty houses made of brick and flint and a small village brimming with culture, local warmth and the lulling sound of the 18th-century windmill.
The founding place of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the hotel and the area are famed for their beauty and abundance of birds that flourish along the shingle beach and saline lagoons. At The George (very much a pub with rooms), seven of the 10 rooms look directly upon the reserve, making it the perfect retreat into English nature - an idyll for families, birdwatchers or romancers alike.
Set in a cosy pub, the room amenities include en-suite bathrooms, large super-king-size beds and hospitality trays for that all-important first brew of the day. Comfortable furnishings and soft lighting invite you to relax.

Dining
The food receives rave reviews for its fresh, delicious flavours and locally sourced ingredients. Specials change on a regular basis: for dinner, you might tuck into local crab, fresh sea bass, local strawberries and delicious local artisan cheeses. There's a range of fine cask ales and wines to choose from, too.
Location
Cley-next-the-Sea is a pretty little village in the north of Norfolk. The location is quite rural, without streetlamps and with a real sense of peace and seclusion. Formerly the most important port in East Anglia for wool and grain, the village bursts with character and history and is home to a 13th-century church. The Cley marshes are famed for their array of rare birds, from avocets to bearded tits and bittern. The Cley Smokehouse is a must-visit, with treats including smoked mackerel, duck, prawns and eels, to name but a few.
