I have seven cats, and thought I'd try these. I bought two and hung up, but not one of my cats actually tried them. I plunked them up and just jumped straight off, not that impressed.
Your cats probably could smell the manufacturers smell, always best to put brand new bedding in your laundry wash before use, to be accepted as part of the household, or place a garment of clothing or bedding the cat usually sleeps on for encouragement 
They are no good for a very thick mediators like the modern square ones from Screwfix
Gosh I love the tunnel/tubes you've got for your fluffy's, wish I'd have seen them before I got mine, I think I might look at an upgrade for mine
Still using the two I bought for my cats in the naughties, great price, cheaper that what I paid, so simple and easy to clean, cats won't sleep anywhere else if the heating is on.
