** Updated and refreshed 4th December **

Sim only plans are great way to budget and get the best value without being tied up for 2 or even 3 years to a phone and airtime contract.

A really good way to use them is to buy your phone outright either refurbished or brand new at a discount (I have used Very and got 10% off (using Credit Account) a brand new already discounted iPhone) then pick the tariff that suits you the best.

If you know what you want and what your usage is, a 12 month sim only contract offers the best value for money but if you aren't sure or are a light user, a 30 day rolling contact maybe best for you.

I know a lot of people have sim only for their kids as you can cap the contract so they can't spend over the allowance but you have the security of knowing they have a phone in an emergency and you can always get hold of them.

A few of the best deals on different networks with examples below. I have put what network each provider uses as I know coverage varies on area so you don't have to go with O2 to get O2 coverage etc.

Stand Out Deals This Month

£20 per month at mobiles.co.uk but you get £144 cashback via redemption making it £8 a month

Image

£8 per month at mobile phones direct but you get £12 cashback via redemption making it £7 a month

Image

£30 per month at Affordable Mobiles but you get £180 cashback via redemption making it £15 a month

Image

Sky Mobile

Uses O2 network. 12 Month Minimum Term on all these plans plus you get unlimited streaming on all Sky Apps and unlimited calls and texts on all plans

a great tip is to haggle with your current provider I spent 45 minutes with O2 and went from 500mb for £9.99 a month to 6gb unlimited minutes and texts for a £10 a month so if you have the time it’s worth it

Tom I was with O2 and giff gaff ran off O2 so i said i would switch to them. Also other family member used other networks showing the deal they can get. Means can keep O2 priority bonus !!

I think this was on MSE: for the best deal go through to cancellations as they have the ability to give the greatest discounts (apparently known internally as customer retentions)

Most people mainly want data these days with texting and calling not used as much as social media and WhatsApp etc

Sky might roll over data but their data allowance is quite low

There's also a 'hidden' deal with Three at just £18 a month for 100GB data, unlimited calls & text. (12 months)

I've tried posting a deal today for the Samsung S10e at £28 p/m for 100GB data + free headphones worth £129, but the system has tried to add an affiliate code to the url so it doesn't work.

There are some exclusive partner channel deals that Three are not showing their website visitors but can be accessed using partner links.

Any ideas what to do please Tom

Thanks for sharing, just wondering, why must you be under 30 to use them? And if I use them now will they legit just turn around and go boom you've had your birthday we're gonna terminate your one month early or something like that?

I have just checked and found out they have now lifted the age ban.... 🎉

Apparently it was because they thought only under 30’s would be drawn to the unlimited social media but their parent company Vodaphone have removed the age restriction now so I will edit and update 👍🏻

I agree haggle with your current provider as I’ve had better deals every year on my sim only contract. Also when ringing them ensure you have details of a few other providers to make them think your moving providers!
