I used to work at an importer that dealt with a Chinese manufacturer that made lots of different types of helmets including bike helmets although we never imported those. However when you see the factory door price vs the retail price its a staggering difference. A bike helmet that costs 1 to 2 dollars ends up sometimes retailed at 20 pounds or more depending on the importer brand and their position in the market. It is only a bit of plastic, foam and fabric, all extremely cheap materials. Also bare in mind Mips is not a recognised safety standard in certification, it is a commercial product that is not included in any normal safety tests. The tests for Mips features of helmets are normally paid for by Mips itself and not truly independent.
