Why does the NHS say all UK adults should consider taking vitamin D supplements from October?
According to the NHS, everyone in the UK should consider taking a vitamin D supplement from October to late March.
Low levels of vitamin D can lead to muscle weakness, falls and fragility fractures in older people. However, our bodies can’t generate enough of this vital nutrient during the winter months because it is made when our skin comes into contact with UV radiation from sunlight. For several months the sun is too weak at this latitude for the body to create sufficient vitamin D.
In line with Public Health England, the NHS says that all adults should take a daily 10µg supplement during the autumn and winter to make up for the shortfall.
‘Due to location and diet, people in the UK could be more likely to be low in both vitamin D and K. It therefore made sense to work on a formulation which included both of these vitamins.’ says Miriam Ferrer PhD, head of product development.
