FREE-BIKE! A GIFT FROM HALFORDS

Everyone’s been affected by the coronavirus crisis, but for young people coming into the job market, things are particularly tough right now. Youth unemployment is on course to reach its highest levels since the early 1980s and the ongoing uncertainty around the pandemic mean it’s never been more challenging for young people to find – and retain – work.

Here at Halfords, we wanted to go some small way to help young people overcome this challenge and that’s why we’ve launched the Free-bike! scheme.

WHAT’S THE FREE-BIKE! SCHEME?

Free-bike! is designed to help young people who have either lost their job during the pandemic or have been out of work for three months or more. We’re giving away 20 brilliant Apollo, Carrera and Pendleton e-bikes (plus accessories), worth up to £999, to help these young people to get out and about to find work.

The scheme is open to young people aged 18-24 and you can find out how to apply below. As the e-bikes are intended to help people who are experiencing economic hardship due to the pandemic, we’ll ask you to say a few words about this during the application process.

Ann1984 yes but shouldn’t people with children be priority as no job or furloughed means no food on the table for children then when they do get back to work they then have to buy new bike or pay for buses doesn’t make sense to me

They are giving away 20 ebikes but I guess if they were giving away standard bikes they could have given away perhaps 60 or 80 for the same money. Not a criticism just a thought about how many more people they could help.

Another thought would they could offer a bike at very low margin, boxed only for those who only have a little money i.e. maybe a £60 basic bike for those currently unemployed. The sort of basic bike they typically sell for around £80 normally. That would increase hugely the amount of people that would benefit.

My last thought is as we leave the EU assuming we don't introduce the same tariffs as the EU on cycling goods many cycling products from Asia will become cheaper (ebikes from China have EU tariffs up to 80%) so Halfords could try to lower bike prices as soon as possible to reflect the lack of tariffs. No difference to their margin.

I'm a big fan of Halfords though, they do some great value bikes which they import themselves and retail directly which means their prices are much lower than the big bike brands.
