Discounts for disabled people
People who are severely mentally impaired aren’t included when working out Council Tax.
You also aren’t included if you’re a live-in carer looking after someone who isn’t your partner, spouse, or child under 18.
Apply for a Council Tax discount.
Disabled Band Reduction Scheme
You may be eligible for the scheme if you live in a larger property than you would need if you or another occupant weren’t disabled.
You’ll have to show that you’ve either:
an extra bathroom, kitchen or other room that you need for the disabled person
extra space inside the property for using a wheelchair
The property must be the main home of at least 1 disabled person. This can be an adult or a child - it doesn’t have to be the person responsible for paying the Council Tax.
This is an amazing find! It just goes to show that we are not made aware of all help available, more so at times like this. Thanks for sharing Mrmac.
Please note, for SMI discount/exemption the individual must be in receipt of DLA care, pip daily living, or attendance allowance. The council tax section will contact the person's GP to confirm they are considered SMI.
There are various reasons a person can be excluded for council tax, these should all be listed on your local council's website.
Also note that a person will only be fully exempt if they are the only chargeable adult in the property, or if all adults come under an exemption i.e. student, SMI, carer, being paid child benefit for, etc. If there are two other adults in a property there will be no discount as a full charge is based on 50% property charge, and 25% for two adults.
Don't forget that if you're on a low income your local council run means tested local council tax reduction schemes, if you're struggling it's worth looking into whether you qualify for assistance through this.
This is brilliant to know. While it doesn't apply to myself at first glance it seems to apply to my Grandfather who has dementia. I will look into it further. Thank you ever so much for the share
You get a discount on council tax but you still have to pay water and sewage or waste but the discount really helps
I think every little helps add up! I worked out the other day how much I have lowered my outgoings by looking in to council tax, switching energy supplier and switched to sim-only mobile phone plan..
Across the year my saving will be over £1000! Hoping to take my my children on holiday with what I will put away
well this is handy, just need to win my pip as they are being difficult despite my debilitating mental health problems
Best of luck, I know they can be quite difficult!! Always knocking my mum off because she can wipe herself and put a ready meal in the microwave!!
