Barclays Shares Compensation Update After Payment Chaos – What to Know

- Thousands of Barclays customers were unable to make or receive payments due to a major tech glitch
- The outage happened on payday and the self-assessment tax deadline, causing financial headaches
- Barclays has promised no customer will be "left out of pocket" if they incurred fees
Barclays has reassured customers that anyone affected by last weekend’s payment outage will not suffer financial losses, as the bank promises to cover any late fees caused by the disruption.
Levi Winchester reported in The Mirror the technical glitch hit thousands of customers on Friday and Saturday, preventing payments from being processed. The timing was particularly bad, as it clashed with payday for millions of Brits and the self-assessment tax deadline—potentially leading to HMRC fines for late payments.
The issue has now been resolved, with Barclays confirming that delayed payments have been processed. However, if you were hit with late fees or other charges due to the outage, the bank advises contacting them directly to claim compensation. Affected customers can call Barclays on 0800 282 390 or raise a complaint via the bank’s app or website.
Some customers took to social media to express their frustration, with one saying their January wages “disappeared” after being paid in, leaving them at risk of overdraft charges. Meanwhile, another said, “Can’t pay my tax bill – what a day to have system issues.”
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, the discount code platform, said, “Tech issues like this can be incredibly stressful, especially when it affects wages and bills. If you’ve been hit with extra charges, don’t hesitate to contact Barclays and request compensation—they’ve committed to making sure no one is left out of pocket.”
