When it comes to indulging in a delicious pain au chocolat, most of us would love to enjoy that authentic French bakery taste without the hefty price tag. So, I decided to test a range of supermarket offerings, rating them on taste, quality, and, of course, value for money.

Morrisons' £1.80 pack of four all-butter pains au chocolat (£0.45 each) took the crown, delivering bakery-quality pastries at an incredibly affordable price. The dark chocolate filling was rich and generous, with a buttery, flaky pastry that almost had me convinced it came from a Parisian boulangerie.

Sainsbury’s came in at £1.60 for six individually wrapped treats, perfect for grabbing on the go. While these weren’t the most visually appealing, their dense texture and solid chocolate made them a decent option for a filling snack.

Tesco’s Finest (£2.40 for four) also offered excellent dark chocolate filling, with its decadent and moist pastry layers, earning a strong 4/5 for quality. However, their higher price meant they didn’t quite top Morrisons in terms of value.

Aldi's Bon Appetit range at £1.49 for eight didn’t disappoint, offering strong chocolate flavour and good texture despite being a more budget-friendly option. However, they were a little too sweet for some tastes.

Other notable mentions included M&S's hefty £3 offering, which was big and indulgent but not great for those on a budget, and Lidl’s Rowan Hill at £1.29, which had the lowest rating due to its dry, lacklustre pastry and stingy chocolate filling.
