Bin Collection Chaos: Millions Face MONTHLY Pick-Ups Despite Council Tax Hikes

Image
  • 42 councils considering cutting bin collections to save money.
  • Some areas may only have rubbish collected once a month.
  • Council tax bills set to rise by £109 on average.
  • Over eight million people could be affected by reduced services.

A new report has revealed that millions of households across the UK could soon see their bin collections reduced - despite facing an increase in council tax bills.

Ethan Singh reported in The Sun that data from the Taxpayers’ Alliance shows 42 councils are looking to cut waste collection services to balance their budgets. If approved, over eight million people could be affected, with five million seeing their rubbish collected less frequently and another 800,000 facing reduced recycling collections.

Some councils, including Bristol, Carmarthenshire, and East Ayrshire, are considering switching to monthly pick-ups for residual waste, sparking backlash from residents. In Bristol alone, thousands have signed a petition opposing the plans, which the council claims could save up to £2.3 million.

Meanwhile, councils in North Ayrshire, Dundee, and Angus are debating whether to reduce recycling collections to once a month.

At the same time, council tax bills are expected to rise by an average of £109, leaving many residents frustrated that they’ll be paying more for fewer services.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, the discount code platform, said, "People are being asked to pay more but getting less in return—it’s no wonder they’re frustrated. If these changes go ahead, it might be time to get savvy with waste reduction and recycling to avoid overflowing bins."

I think Somerset council are getting rid of about 550 staff, they will be selling off council houses and other assets and cutting back on services. They are an utterly incompetent council who happen to be Liberal Democrat mainly but there are both Labour and Conservative councils equally useless and incompetent. They pay themselves high salaries with amazing pensions but are utterly clueless how to do their jobs. Really the state should prosecute them for incompetence and remove their pensions if found to be incompetent and wasteful of money. In the public sector no one seems to get properly punished for utter incompetence.

Seriously, unless you live in the major towns these days your treated like you don't pay your bills. We had a change to collections years ago to cut costs, and for families this is a challenging fortnightly collection, with bins overflowing.

First the second rate post office service, now this.

I live under a Labour council, and in this time of cuts. I wonder when they (the council), will stop giving money to their pet projects. As for giving breakfasts before school starts, why not a glass of milk and a bun? It's their parents duty to feed their children. Or move the school day times, starting at 8am and ending 1:30 - 2pm: Having a short break for a sandwich.

anthonycharlesp I agree in principle with providing free breakfasts for all pupils but whenever the state provides such a service it is so expensive compared to people themselves feeding their own children with good quality food which they have purchased more cheaply. It's not just employing people to prepare and cook the food but all the logistics in the background with people being paid to create the backbone of the service, get the food to schools, organise contracts and all the modern day expenses of employing people which are huge nowadays. A meal you could create for £2 becomes a £5 meal when the state provides it. I don't know what the solution is except the country needs to focus on reducing costs as a priority.

I live in Chorley and Chorley borough council/ Lancashire county council should be rolling in it due to the thousands of houses which have been built over the last 20 years, all paying council tax etc. The amenities in the area have not kept up with the amount of new housin, eg doctors surgery’s, schools and so on. As far as I am aware the recycling of garden waste goes to another company who then make it into compost and sell on?? So why do we have to pay even more if we want our grey garden bin emptied. Councils waste money in my opinion.

JulieMullins I don't know how much debt your council has but if it has a lot of council houses and a lot of debt I can see them being sold and gradually rent will increase year by year until close to real market rental prices I guess as the new owners claw back profit from their investment. I think it typically goes the council would sell their council stock housing at below market value but the new owners will have to cap rent for a few years etc.

However of course if your council is well run without staggering levels of debt then it won't have to do this.
