  • Wayne Mulholland, 38, created a unique bunkbed complete with slide and hearts
  • The project took Wayne five days and cost him £200
  • Similar store-bought beds can cost up to £3,300

If your kids are craving a unique bunkbed for their room but everything online seems crazily expensive, why not take inspiration from this DIY dad and make your own wallet-friendly version?

Wayne Mulholland, a 38-year-old father of three from Coventry, created this stunning bunkbed for his friend’s daughters - and it cost him just £200, a fraction of what a shop-bought bunkbed would cost.

Wayne, a diamond driller and concrete repairer, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: “I built this bunkbed with a slide and stairs with storage underneath.

"The idea of my builds are all off the top of my head so that each one is unique.

"To get the hearts and butterflies that I used, I bought some small MDF templates off ebay for a few pounds, drew around them and cut them out with a jigsaw.

"There is a lot of work involved in making these, as I draw on the MDF sheet and cut everything out using a jigsaw.

"I built the bed using 12mm MDF. I drew the design on using MDF stencils and cut it all out.

“The frame work was made using 4x2 timbers which makes it a very sturdy bed. It has been weight-tested and can take 25 stone plus!

“This bed was made for a good friend for her daughters, and they absolutely love it with hours of fun!

“The bed costs around £200 to build depending on how many colours you use and design.

“To build the bed, it took about five days from beginning to end. I’ve designed the bed to be flat pack.

“The stairs, slide, front and back are separate sections, which is ideal for moving around.

“Once the bed is made and all the holes are filled it’s all sanded down and has three coats of paint to give it its lovely finish.

"I’ve used about 300 screws in the bed which some people will find it hard to believe as you don’t see most of them!”

The amazing bunkbed is just one of Wayne’s inventive creations, and he thoroughly enjoys dreaming up each project and seeing the build through.

"Over the years I have built many unique builds ranging from garden planters to a complete bedroom set consisting of a double bed, wardrobes with overhead storage and a vanity table,” he adds.

"I like to think up new and exciting designs to try and I am excited to see how my next project will turn out!”

Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “A quick Google search for a princess bunkbed with a slide will bring up some incredible creations - but many of them cost over £3,300!

“Most of us would never dream of splashing out that amount on a bed - but the prohibitive cost doesn’t mean your kids can’t enjoy their own amazing slide bunkbed.

“Wayne’s project proves that as long as you’re confident in your DIY skills, you can create your very own bespoke bunkbed for a fraction of the price using bargain materials such as MDF!

“If you’re not skilled at DIY, make sure you watch plenty of tutorials online first - YouTube and Pinterest are great places to gather free tips.”
