eBay Buyers Hit With New Fees – Here’s How Much More You’ll Pay

Image
  • New eBay fees start today (February 4), increasing costs for buyers.
  • A 75p flat fee plus up to 4% extra on purchases from private sellers.
  • A £20 item now costs £21.55, while a £2,000 item jumps to £2,046.

eBay says it's for buyer protection, but critics call it an unjustified price hike.

If you shop on eBay, you’re in for a nasty surprise—from today, February 4, the platform is introducing new fees for buyers, making it more expensive to shop on the site.

As reported by Alex Evans, eBay has removed listing fees for private sellers, making it free to sell unwanted items. But in a controversial move, the auction site is passing the cost onto buyers with a new ‘Buyer Protection Fee’.

Here’s what you’ll now pay:

  • A flat 75p charge on every item from a private seller.
  • A 4% fee on the first £300 of an item’s price.
  • A 2% fee on anything between £300 and £4,000.
For example:
  • A £20 item now costs £21.55 after fees.
  • A £2,000 item now costs £2,046—a £46 increase.

Money-saving experts have criticised the move, arguing that eBay already has a Money Back Guarantee in place, and the new fees don’t offer any major additional protections.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, the discount code platform, said, “For bargain hunters, this is frustrating. eBay has long been a go-to for second-hand deals, but these new fees make it harder to get a true bargain. Shoppers may now look elsewhere for better prices.”

People have forgotten it's been maybe six months(?) of zero fees - fees returning should have been expected.

Well I won't be buying anything else from now on from EBAY!

Ridiculous adding money on for 'protection' that's a Scam as far as I'm concerned, thanks for sharing this.

If its still a good price then fair enough, if not buy elsewhere. If sellers don't have to pay fees the listed price might be lower in the first place

The thing was before you often had 70% off and 80% off ebay listing weekends and a load of people didn't list until such events. However there are probably no promotions like that now so really the price of listing on ebay has gone up dramatically. A huge increase. Ultimately all buyers are interested in the final price. I use ebay as a seller and buyer and in both instances I will use ebay less. Also I'm a bit worried about what is happening with tax now so I was trying to de-clutter as a terrible hoarder to accelerate paying off my mortgage but now the environment of selling is much, much worse it seems. I guess its best to move to gumtree, facebook marketplace etc.

But they advertise no fees for private sellers on Ebay now so maybe they will drop their prices somewhat to cover increases for buyers !!

Downtrodden It's manipulative as no fees for sellers is not really true as the fees for buyers means the seller price is higher. There are now higher fees for smaller items than previously. All people care about is the final price and it has now gone up due to an increase in fees overall.

Just looked at some of my items for sale on ebay and see the lower cost items have gone up a lot. So huge inflation in ebay prices now especially for lower value items so ebay has become far less competitive now. We shall see how it all turns out but it feels like the 75p fee for all sales is very uncompetitive. A flat percentage would seem better.
