Energy Giant Pays Out £1.5 Million After Shock Billing Blunder – Are You Owed?

Thousands of energy customers have been handed unexpected windfalls after Octopus Energy was forced to pay out almost £1.5million following a shocking billing blunder.

Energy watchdog Ofgem uncovered that over 34,000 prepayment meter customers were left in the dark, not receiving their final bills within the six-week deadline as required. Without those final bills, many households were unaware they were even owed money back.

The glitch, which stretched back to 2014, has now seen Octopus fork out £231,000 in refunds for unused credit, alongside £1.25million in compensation, with average payouts of £43 per customer.

In a classic move of ‘putting things right’, Octopus also wiped some customers' debts and claims to have charged prepay customers £70 below the price cap—a rare bonus in the middle of spiralling energy bills.

The regulator's Beth Martin said: “It’s important that customers receive final bills in accordance with our rules… This is particularly vital for prepayment meter customers who are more likely to face financial hardship.”

The compensation is expected to be completed by September, with payments made either directly to accounts or by cheque. For those who can’t be contacted, funds will be donated to help struggling households via the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Fund.

Octopus Energy, one of the UK’s fastest-growing suppliers, said it had “updated its systems” and called for Ofgem to focus more on “lowering bills” than on red tape.
