Shoppers Fume As They Spot Easter Treat Has Shrunk But The Price Has Increased

Image
  • Creme Egg multipacks drop from 10 to 8 eggs, with a price hike to £5.50
  • Cost per egg nearly doubles compared to last year’s Clubcard prices
  • Cadbury blames rising cocoa costs for the change

Cadbury has sparked outrage among shoppers after reducing the number of Creme Eggs in its multipacks while also increasing the price. The packs, which last year contained 10 eggs and sold for £3 with a Tesco Clubcard (£4.95 without), now include just 8 eggs and are priced at £5.50 or £4.75 with a Clubcard.

Shrinkflation Strikes Again

This change means that with a loyalty card, each egg now costs 59p, compared to just 30p last year under promotional prices. By comparison, a single Creme Egg currently costs 75p in Asda.

The move hasn’t gone unnoticed, with users on forums like hotukdeals voicing their frustration. One shopper called it “ridiculous,” labelling the situation a clear case of “shrinkflation.” Others remembered when multipacks contained six eggs instead of five, a reduction that occurred back in 2015.

Cadbury Explains

Cadbury’s parent company, Mondelez International, defended the change, citing the 132% rise in cocoa prices over the past 12 months. Dan Coatsworth, an analyst at investment firm AJ Bell, added: “Cocoa prices have more than quadrupled over two years, putting immense pressure on chocolate makers.”

Cadbury stated it only reduces product sizes as a "last resort" to manage rising supply chain costs.

Rising Costs Across the Range

This isn’t the only Easter shock for chocolate lovers. Fans of Mini Eggs have noticed a price increase of over a third for small bags since last year. Similarly, in 2024, family packs of Cadbury chocolates shrank from 216g to 207g, while prices remained the same.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said: “It’s disappointing for shoppers to see rising costs on what were once affordable treats. Shrinkflation hits hard when paired with rising household expenses.”

I could quite easily eat 2 or 3 of these in one sitting now as they are quite small.

Even the cheap bars of fruit and nut chocolate are heading towards £2 a bar now for 200g. It doesn't seem that long ago they were close to a £1. I dread to think what a bar of Cadbury's fruit and nut is now however I've no interest in Creme eggs so couldn't care less if they reduced them to the size of a few atoms as I'll never be buying them anyway. Not keen on the taste of the middle bit to say the least but can tolerate the little ones in tubs of heroes.

I think this is outrageous. I love Cadbury’s Cream Eggs but come on what are Cadbury’s thinking - smaller eggs, higher price? What a rip off.

Everything has decreased in weight but charge a higher cost. Why do all these producers assume we’re thick and can’t see what they’re doing?
