Morrisons Launches NEW Chicken Shop Menu In Cafes But Not All Shoppers Are Happy

- Morrisons launches Birds Eye Chicken Shop meals in its cafés
- Customers fume over meals costing nearly double the in-store price
- Comes after widespread café closures and menu price hikes
Shoppers have been left reeling after Morrisons cafés quietly rolled out a limited-edition Birds Eye Chicken Shop menu — only for customers to realise they’re being charged what some are calling a “rip-off”.
Until 20 July, diners can tuck into the Chicken Shop Ultimate Burger plate: a Birds Eye chicken burger with chips, beans and a drink for £8. Or, if they fancy the Salt and Pepper Chicken Goujons plate, that'll be £8 too — unless you double up and add gravy, in which case it skyrockets to £15.
But here’s the catch: those same chicken goujons cost just £4 for a pack in the supermarket aisles. And the Ultimate Fillet burgers? Two for £4 — that's £2 a patty. One shopper quipped on social media: “So you take from the shop floor and charge double in the restaurant.”
Another joked: “Is that Birds Eye being flogged in the café at KFC prices?”
This furore comes on the back of sweeping café closures — 52 were shut in March — and price rises across the board. Morrisons’ Ultimate Breakfast went up from £8 to £8.50, and other increases have crept in, too.
But not everyone’s up in arms. Some parents point out the Kids Eat Free deal softens the blow: one adult meal over £4.50 means a child eats free. “Yeah, it’s a rip-off,” one shopper said, “but with two kids eating free, it’s not too bad.”
A spokesperson defended the menu, saying: “With our ongoing Kids Eat Free deal, when purchasing one adult meal, a family of four can dine for as little as £15.”
This latest move follows the closure of dozens of stores and counters, including butchers, florists, and Post Office branches. Morrisons boss Rami Baitiéh said these shake-ups were necessary to “reinvigorate” the business.
But for shoppers eyeing up their favourite frozen goods being plated up at twice the cost, it’s not sitting well.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, the discount code platform said, "People are right to compare café and shelf prices — it’s natural. I always say, if you’ve got the time, cooking at home with the same ingredients can save you a lot. But for families out and about, the Kids Eat Free deal does help. Still, transparency goes a long way."

My local Morrisons have closed their fresh fish counter a week ago and their hot food counter to... I miss the fresh fish counter, as living alone I could buy exactly the amount I wanted... Now it's all prepacked and in larger portions.... Morrisons have 100% gone down hill since they sold out.... The only reason I still shop there is due to it being convient for me... I am physically disabled and I do struggle, but the staff in my nearest branch are wonderfull and very happy to help me...xx
