Major Chinese Grocer Launches In The UK Set To Rival Amazon

Image
  • JD.com’s giant e-commerce platform Joybuy is launching in the UK, bringing a hybrid shopping experience combining the best of Tesco and Amazon Prime.
  • Offering everything from frozen food to furniture, it promises speedy delivery and competitive prices, with over 500 million global customers.
  • Shoppers in London can now enjoy free shipping on their first three orders and access limited-time 'flash sales'.

China’s e-commerce giant, JD.com, is taking the UK by storm with its online supermarket Joybuy, which has just launched in London as part of a test phase. The massive retailer, boasting over 500 million customers globally, is offering an extensive range of products, from food and frozen items to furniture and tobacco, all with promises of quick delivery—many items arriving the same or next day.

Joybuy is described as a hybrid of the UK's Tesco and Amazon Prime, delivering a broad selection of goods at competitive prices. The site even offers imported snacks and exclusive items, like Lays potato chips, alongside big-name brands.

The retailer’s introductory offerings include free shipping on the first three orders, various 'flash sales', and the promise of steep discounts on popular products. Early reports highlight price comparisons that show Joybuy's potential to undercut even major UK supermarkets like Tesco and Waitrose, particularly on well-known brands.

However, not everything is available just yet. Fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, butter, and milk are notably absent, though these gaps are likely to be filled as the service grows. With plans to expand after the testing phase, Joybuy’s unique blend of competitive pricing and fast delivery is stirring up excitement among UK shoppers.

Gavin Wren, a food policy expert, noted that Joybuy’s UK entry “represents a real shake-up in the grocery landscape,” offering both affordability and convenience.

Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, the discount code platform, said, “Joybuy’s arrival in the UK adds a new twist to the e-commerce and grocery scene. Speedy delivery and strong price points are sure to appeal to UK shoppers, especially as the platform grows its offering.

Taking the UK by storm when it has only just launched in London as a test phase?

It's like when ebay AI writes copy for your items, it makes absolutely no sense and you dare not use it as the item you are sending doesn't match the description at all.

It will be interesting to see what happens though. Also what happened to those Russian supermarkets that were going to shake up the UK supermarket scene and take the UK by storm?

The UK is facing huge reductions in income and much greater poverty. It may not be the best time to make investments here. However this could be a simple online business reselling products and services from other suppliers and may not require huge investment. Through lower cost wages in China they could operate a e-commerce site here with lower margins that would undercut other UK online sites also reselling UK based goods and services who need a higher margin as paying UK wages etc.

They should be made to change their brand title as JD is already established here as a sport retailer and this emulates their logo.

Downtrodden from reading the article, it seems JD is the parent company and the retail arm will be called Joybuy (although I'm sure some marketing bod will realise it's not gonna catch on here and change it)

It's actually alright. It's like Amazon crossed with one of those delivery services that will get you toothpaste or whatever within the hour. Prices aren't special, can't see any offers; I do like the Asian stuff under foods though. On the home page, you see Apple airpods right next to strawberry jam 😂

It's just a convenience thing, after a five minute peruse, it's not saving you any money, but first three deliveries are free of charge.
